Lack of flexibility, management uses you if you don’t make the store your life
I remember starting working here, truthfully, the job itself is fine. It’s exactly what it sounds like, scan some groceries and count the cash at the end of the day. Co workers were really a 50/50, some of them just wanted you to drown but others were actually willing to help you out when it got busy. There was always this overlooming sense of shame. If you messed up, you were the worst. The flexibility was also non existent. I asked for 3 days off in the summer that I wasn’t normally scheduled to work and was judged heavily. I was asked to come in to cover another’s shift and was not available (due to a family emergency), and was then in turn met with animosity. I could never get a shift covered. I had to miss a family gathering that involved family I had not seen in years. Not to mention I was given lottery tickets as Christmas gifts (I was 15 or 16 at the time, asked them if they wanted it back, they said no). Management is the worst. They treated me like I didn’t matter. Eventually I had to quit because of a knee injury. I wasn’t given a stool, so I had to leave instead… I had a threadbare mat to stand on and was expected to perform tasks that led to me seeing a chiropractor- he asked me if I did a job that involved HEAVY PHYSICAL LABOUR. I scanned groceries!! The customers were fine, the occasional rude one, but that’s just customer service and I don’t remember most of them. If management conducted themselves in even half a respectable way then I would be far more willin

Never a dull moment, constantly having to prove to Customers that they saw the wrong price
A typical day at work has me greeting, serving and thanking hundreds of Customers. The majority of Customers are easy to deal with and very respectable, My department (Service) by far has the most employees, about 50. Most of them are students and therefore quite young. They require attention and supervision constantly. With the combination of a young staff, running constantly for price verification and the occasional irate Customer, a 9-10 hour day is quite demanding. Most days I do not have lunch. Because of my vast experience and responsibilities, everyone turns to me when something needs to be done. I am the only manager on the floor that is in a suit so EVERYONE comes to me. I have learned to admire and respect people in retail. Customers can be quite demanding and some also quite rude with little or no reward to the employee. There are 2 Owners and they are complete opposites. Listening to 2 different opinions on how something needs to be done can sometimes be tough. The store employs over 100 people and I probably only know about 75% but of the ones I know I can probably split in 2 equal halves. The group that comes in and does the minimum and the group that is very Customer Service oriented. I have some amazing kids and some very spoiled kids as well. I believe there are 3 things that are equally difficult. 1) Preparing a work schedule (about 10 hours a week done at home) 2) There is so much theft in the store so I am always on the lookout.
Points positifsCustomers, meeting people everyday, never a dull moment
Points négatifsAlways running, no time to eat. never a quiet moment

Productive workplace with great hours and friendly staff
Working at Marketplace IGA was overall a good experience for me that helped me gain great customer service skills. A typical day at IGA began at 7:00am proofing all our baked items such as bread, buns, croissants, cinnamon buns and other pastries. Typically in the mornings I would look after all the baking and my manager would take care of the deli. IGA in Lake Country is located just up the road from the George Elliot school so we often got very busy around lunch time and I would prep lunch for the students beforehand. Lunch prep included making wraps, sandwiches, salads and hot case items such as chicken strips, french fries, hotdogs and burgers. I was not only responsible for the preparation and production of what we made but also the presentation. Throughout the day responsibilities included slicing deli meats and cheese for customers, helping customers find store items, taking cake orders, and running them through the deli till. We had a few managers come and go so i was responsible for training them on how our scales work and where we keep our frozen products and our meats and cheeses. I trained many of our night shift staff & day time weekend staff on customer service, baking, deli prep, and presentation. the hardest part of the job for me was cleaning the bakery department freezers. We get a lot of product in and our freezers were not big enough so I was constantly struggling to keep them organized and sometimes it would take me up to an hour. The most enjoyable part of

Great co-workers, not so great managers
It's a good job if you're a student looking for a first job and part time work.Although if you are looking to support yourself or get into this chain as a career, I wouldn't bother. They do not treat their staff very well and are very frugal with any expenses. The 'cashier sweater' is one example of this. This item is one sweater that the cashiers share if they get cold, the sleeves are held together by safety pins and are tattered beyond repair. This is only the beginning of this companies short comings to their staff treatment. The staff bathrooms are always nauseatingly unclean with clogged toilets, tampon garbage bins that go months upon months without cleaning (to the point where used tampons are falling out onto the ground), the microwave in the staff room is coated in food and missing the plate, and the entire back room looks like a good place to catch a disease. There is little to no appreciation shown to the bottom pay grade cashiers, and it feels like a job you will get trapped in with no room to advance. The turn-over rate is high, and sticking through will earn you no reward. Almost all of my co-workers want to get more hours but instead Marketplace IGA insists on hiring more part time staff. This is a little more of a stretch but still an observation worth noting: I feel that this specific IGA is very gender separated. All of the produce employees are men, all of the floor employees are men, all of the cashiers are female, and all of the bakery employees a

Friendly work environnment
A typical day at work consisted of serving customers at the cash, answering their questions and assisting them with any other needs in the grocery store. I learned a lot about team work, especially during the time the store was under renovation. We lost a lot of our clientele so when the renovations were complete, my team and I worked together to assure stellar service and brainstormed ways to entice people to shop at our store. The hardest part of the job was when there were few people in the store and my position as a cashier did not allow me to have anything else to do. The most enjoyable part was having given quality service to clients and having that acknowledged by my superiors and by the clients themselves. Management was great, not as available as I would have liked because they worked mostly during the week and I worked evenings and weekends a lot. My employers were very enthusiastic and positively contributed to the work environment. My co-workers were the reason I maintained this position for as long as I did because they were wonderful people to work with. My employers did a great job of hiring hard working people with friendly personalities that contributed to the work environment and also to the type of service we assured.

It''d be alright if it was just part-time.
There's a bit of a power struggle that's exhibited here, working within the deli most the workers are indeed quite reliable and are pleasant enough to work with, most the time. There's a subtly negative atmosphere which feels really grimy after awhile and brings down the department morale. There's no HR department for this place, so if you have a complaint about say, the store owner, you have to deal directly with him and there's absolutely no measure for him to change if you say something. There's also no whistleblower policy they honor at this place and I specifically told them to not use my name and wanted to submit my claim anonymously. There should be that especially in a franchise store. Much of the equipment within the deli department is either poor or faulty, things take a long time to get repaired, their back storage is quite unorganized. I could keep listing examples but there's a start. Also think it's ridiculous that your breaks aren't optional, so if you'd like to skip breaks to go home slightly earlier they don't allow you to. There's typically enough overlap between shifts that this usually able to happen smoothly.
Points positifsFree expired food
Points négatifsQuite bad communication and equipment on site besides the oven

Fun environment, fun employees, flexible schedule, good management.
My job was very enjoyable. I spent the days baking, making/designing cakes. It was definitely my field. Cakes and other pastries were very much by the book, as all desserts must resemble one another from one IGA to the next, but I was also able to be creative and come up with different ideas. That was one of my responsibilities and assistant; to come up with ideas with what would sell well in our department. I also had to make orders, train new employees, make schedules, put in bills, sign for orders when they came in, put away orders, etc. Management was very good, hours and days off were flexible. The only thing I didn't enjoy was being in the freezer for long periods of time putting away the other, or doing other tasks. It's really really cold in there. But that was just a minor dislike. I learned a lot about leadership, patience, dealing with unhappy customers, taking responsibility for my department when my manager wasn't there. It was a really good experience. Also, the salary was not terrible, and we are unionized at IGA and if you're a full time employee, you have medical and dental benefits.

Organized work place with flexible hours
Overall the past 3 1/2 years have been pretty good for a first job. I'd go to work and supervise cashiers as well as serve customers and learn things like how to balance money, and do simple math as well as be respective towards everyone. The management was a little difficult because there wasn't one particular way of doing things. Depending on which boss you were working with, they wanted things handled their way... which was a little complicated. The hardest part of the job was not feeling respected. I often felt like I in particular was not needed, but that they just needed to find anyone to work at any given hour. I like to feel of importance when I enter a work force and I do not at this job. But all in all, it's a great first start! The most enjoyable part of the job were the friends I made. It's amazing to have a job where you love everybody you work with to death, it definitely makes it much more enjoyable. I also definitely like that the hours are flexible, you tell them which days you can or cannot do and which days you need to take off and they will find all ways to ensure that your wishes are granted!
Points positifsAmazing Co-Workers and not long hours
Points négatifsPressure, constantly being yelled at by customers who are having a bad day

Interesting and immersive job dealing with the public
IGA has been a great company to work for, especially as a first job. I've been there almost a year now and it's been pretty great. The management is committed to the employees and will stand for them if the employee is clearly a good person and is putting in hard work if the employee ever needs to be vouched for. The customers can sometimes be difficult or rude but 9/10 times people are friendly and a lot of regular customers come through this store especially. The hardest part of the job is probably when it gets busy trying to do everything you have to do and balance it all and deal with people getting impatient or rude but other than that the job itself isn't overly difficult. If you're older then clean-up duties such as taking out the trash and straightening the shelves may be difficult but fellow employees are typically open to helping out/taking over that clean-up duty if you are unable to do it comfortably. The employees bond together like family at this store and all have each other's backs like if you come at one of us you come at all of us, which is the most enjoyable part of the job because you feel truly like you are part of a team. I've needed to take time off several times in my employment here and the management is always understanding and willing to give time off. This job has been a true blessing and exposes you to some pretty terrible people, but more importantly and commonly, really lovely and great people. I've learned so much from this job and while I plan
Points positifswonderful coworkers/management, regular customers, decent pay, flexible hours

It is a fun place to work with great employees and friendly costumers. the atmosphere in the store had a great feel to it,the employees helped each
7:00 am work started, went through the produce racks to find wilted and out of date produce and products. straightened up the displays to look fresh and appetizing. Helped the customers with questions about the price and types of produce and products. I learned that people are very choosy about the produce and products, they see things differently than I do.example if and apple has a slight blemish or a bruise they don't want it, and I wouldn't think anything about it and it would be fine to eat. The management in this store were great people they would help and work with their employees to make sure you were taken care of and that the customers came first. the co-workers would go out of their way to help you and to help each other to help the customers. the hardest part was when the shipments came into the store on freight day you would have to get the products unloaded and put away in a timely manner so as not to interrupt the flow on the main selling floor. the best part of working here was the customers who would come in and call you by name and have a friendly hello and you would get to know them and who they are and to give them a good experience while they shopped and you also got to know their children...as the years go by the children grow up and when they come into the store they come to say hello to you and they remember your name and you know them by name also and they remember the good times they have shopping with their parents.
Points positifsthe employees and the customers
Points négatifssome of the customers, and their bad attitudes you couldn't do anything right as far as they are concerned

Well organized , work friendly place
The Independent Grocers is one of the largest warehouses that provide extensive service for its local customers and remote community customers in the Northern Territory Australia. There are 9000 variety of products are lined up to serve its customers. As a Dispatch Clerk, I got an opportunity to follow Certificate III in Warehouse Operations to help to carry out the job smoothly. I obtained a license to operate Forklift and had an opportunity to operate High Reach Electric Forklifts. I gained experience on daily administration work related to warehouse operations (packing, picking and dispatching products), and handling computer software related to warehouse operations. The Management of Independent grocers considers employee wellbeing. To ensure that it carries out on the job training and awareness programs. Annual welfare party and monthly BBQ that organized by the company enhances inter personal relationships. Most importantly it welcomes multicultural atmosphere. The management is always happy to hear employees’ suggestions and complaints. My co-workers from different work levels help each other to achieve the company targets. Sometimes the job is bit stressful due to absence of staff member or heavy demand of dispatch work especially during festival season like Christmas. At the dispatch desk all the customers have been ensured the excellent service such as courteous greeting and efficient service. It is an opportunity to exchange friendly chat with our

Alright work place
I have learned nothing new since I have already worked in a Deli before. The day starts off by turning over or "rotating" the cold salads. Management are the only people who are full time. one manager makes it known she has earned her badge and does not need to do dishes, or she makes comments that she gets paid the big bucks. Then the rest of the day is filled with serving customers, wiping down counters and slicers with sanitized water and clean them as best as you can. At the end of the shift you have to wait for someone to relieve you, during the closing shift if it says you get off at 7 some times you will have to stay longer because things are not done on time and there is no set closing time you have to wait on a customer if they come to the counter no matter what time if you are still there. Co-workers are very high school like with the attitude if the ring leader does not like you no one does. They will not fire someone who is a bad worker they wait till they get miserable and quit. The hardest part of the job is doing others work because they are allowed to be lazy (favoritism) the most enjoyable part of the job is working with two of my friends who also share the same view. There is also no pay raise for experience from another store. If it is not busy hours get cut because there are to many people. Some materials are not OSHA approved. I have never seen health inspectors or anyone to check the cleanliness of the department.
Points négatifsPay for uniform shirts from each pay check, pay for lunch which is over $5, work 6 and 1/2 hrs and get one 15 min break, you do not get told when and if you have been written up.

Fast pace work environment.
I arrive at the IGA just as its starting to open, and will work a ten hour day. My main focus is filling the produce section, and making sure there are signs for the items, and making sure the section is clean since, it is the first section you see when you walk into the store. Once I have the front filled and ready to go, I will help my manager with cuts that we also need for the produce section; for example I may help him out in cutting up fruit for fruit cups. I also will check the cooler and make sure it is organized and I also do ordering for the produce section. I've learned a great deal about inventory and how important it is to keep the products in our cooler at a certain level. Working at the IGA has also taught me how to work more efficiently. For the most part all the co-workers are great and we all get a long great, most of have become very good friends, which helps a great deal with teamwork and it makes the day much more enjoyable. The hardest part of my job is, finding enough things to do once the produce section is filled. My manager's main focus is getting the cuts done, and he is usually close to being done the cuts by the time I'm done with the front, this can make for a long ten hours. The part I like most about the IGA is how well most of the staff gets along with each other, and that we can all joke and have fun but get work done at the same time.
Points positifsCo-workers are enjoyable to work with, I get paid vacations and holidays, healthcare
Points négatifsLong hours with short breaks, managment could be better.

It is a very welcoming place to work!
Over all I had an amazing experience working at IGA! A typical work day involved serving customers that came in and helping with any of their needs. When I wasn't serving I was required to put out new stock that had come in that day or if there was no stock that came in I would need to face up the isle and clean the shop. I learned a lot about customer service and how to talk and handle different types of people. I also learned resposibility and how to be as efficent as possible when under time restraints. The managemnet is amazing they do such a good time and cater to everyones needs as best as they can and I do not have anything negative to say they are incredible and the business and individual shops are ran amazingly. The hardest part of the job is getting things done when you are trying to serve and complete tasks. Some days you finsh all the tasks with time to spare and other days you barley get one task done. Talking to customers and staff is the most enjoyable part of working at IGA. 90% of customers are nice as punch and after a while they start becoming your friends and it just makes the job easier when you can actually have a chat and relate with the customers. The staff at the IGA I worked at were like family to me everyone supports eachother and has eachothers back if there is a customer that comes in that is aggrevated but over all the experince at IGA is a pleasurbale one.
Points positifsFlexible Hours and Great people
Points négatifsYou have to be nice even when a customer is being so rude
