Helpful as first job without experience, but that's it if you're not located near headquarters.
I worked at Metro cumulatively around 7 years. It was my first legitimate job at 15 when minimum wage was closer to $7/hr :) Had some great and not-so-great moments that are common to retail.
-Have had experience in different departments, but only after leaving for school and returning for summer/on-going part-time work.
-Definitely a fantastic place to learn humility and appreciation for others in this field when you are the customer!
-Would generally be ok with time off, if booked off minimum 1-3 months in advance and managers notified.
-Was always accepted back no matter how long I'd left.
-Met some great people and customers
-you lose any seniority you gain the second you take a leave of absence. I was told in training doing so for school was accepted; this was not honoured. Lack of training in some departments, particularly after a transfer to be closer to school (never met anyone at that store beyond my first shift and expected I knew where everything/one was in the store :/).
-ALWAYS part-time, ALWAYS minimum wage. Never received a single increase in wage in the 7 years I worked there, beyond when it changed provincially (i.e. even with my two stints of 3 consecutive years). A friend of mine requested a merit raise after a similar working timeframe and was laughed off/suggested that the position was a "gift"/nothing was owed to them.

When I applied, I didn't even ever speak to anyone and nobody saw my resume. They simply told me that I had the job and gave me an orientation packet. The manager was extremely rude to me during the orientation and insinuated that I was poor about 6 or 7 times despite me wearing fairly nice clothing. There was a woman who worked there that would yell at me for every single small thing, like ringing things in too slow even though I was working fairly quick for someone who just started. I never had a single positive experience with anyone who worked with me. They would steal my lunch and just throw it out while I was working and I always had to buy my food. And then when I started putting my food in my locker with my clothes, someone would have a manager cut the lock and the excuse was always that my lock was there for too long which made no sense since sometimes I was only scheduled for three hours. There was also one time when I called an hour in advance to say that I was going to be late and when I got there, I was treated extremely rudely the whole eight hour shift that I was there for. There were also several people on the management team who just completely forgot who I was even when I would come in 5 days a week for a month or something. Also, they were extremely inflexible with my schedule, not even caring that I was 16 and going to school, they would frequently schedule me to start at 1 pm or sometimes 11 am when I didn't even get off school until 3 pm. A typical day at work in Metro Inc. begins with my usual style of prayer to God for help to achieve the tasks, unity among colleagues, peace/safety and profit for the organization. Every day meets with its challenges especially coping with multitasking. I worked in the Produce Dept but I have had cause to give customers a good shopping experience not just in my department but the entire store showing them where the item(s) required is/are displayed. I have very dedicated management staff who are very cooperative and willing to answer my questions and implement my suggestions. I enjoyed working with all my colleagues, however there are a few whose attitude I do not enjoy at all. Primarily their work ethics and commitment is not helping the organization. The hardest part of my job is when I have to lift heavy boxes to stack on racks and also working in the cool room for extensive period breaking down pallets of wares. The attendant pains after work hours are a concern for me. The most enjoyable part of my job is when I make suggestions as to price reductions in some over stocked items and management implements it. Also when I am scheduled with very hardworking colleagues and I see us achieving beyond expectations. I have learned a great deal about working with all kinds of individuals from diverse cultural settings and diverse attitudes some good and some not interesting but have to be tolerated for the progress of the organization. A day at work would typically start with being assigned a few important tasks by my superiors which would not be apart of the usual routine ex. setting up a display for a certain product or event. Following the completion of this task I would then commence my daily routine: making sure that all the displays are properly filled with product and that the displays remain aesthetically pleasing. My other duties were to provide the customer with a great customer experience: being helpful in assisting the customers to find products or any other issues, and being well mannered and polite in dealing with the customer. Other duties I had were to make sure that the department was also clean and ready for customer service, including: cleaning spills, dusting off the displays, removing bad product, covering up the potatoes at the end of the night and sweeping the floor.
As this was my first job I learned quite a bit about what I'd experience in the workforce. One of the biggest things I've learned was being responsible and accountable for my department and work space and duties. Many times, my fellow co-workers would be working less than efficiently to say the least, and I would take initiative to manage and maintain the department's efficiency. I learned allot from this business this is how I got into the cake business and started a passion for cake decorating. I improved my knowledge from hands on work and taking classes and watching videos to make sure I was the best at what I did, I wanted to make sure that when the customers left they left happy.
I got to know regular customers and the things they liked, I could see them coming and have the stuff they needed ready for there arrival such as cutting there bread a certain way or having the product packaged, ladled and ready for them to take so there was no waiting period,
My Day at work all depended on what needed to be done. I was the main cake decorator, but I expanded my knowledge to knowing everything around my department so I new how to do it all. I found it very helpful because I new my way around the hole department if anyone needed something I new if I could get it done or not and when It would be done if I could, I pretty much ran the department with out the manger name.
My Manger and co-workers, where great, we came across some employees that didn't do there job to the full capacity that they were required to do, some stayed and some were let go. The ones that stayed was because we had no other help so those days were kind of rushed having to pick up there slack and do your own it was defiantly rushed and fast passed but we got threw it.

A typical shift for myself would be around 4-6 hours long and be compromised of processing customer transactions, while keeping my area clean and organized. I would normally get a 15 minute break, in which I could eat something quickly then return to finish my shift.
From working at Metro Inc., I have learned how to operate a cash register and work for long periods of time in a fast-paced work environment. It has also taught me how to provide excellent customer service and learn to persevere through work, despite personal issues or other challenges.
I thought most of the management was amazing. They were fair, kept an eye on ongoing operations and engaged with customers to increase their shopping experience. I also found out that one manager in particular had really appreciated my contribution to Metro Inc. and let me know this, which made me feel great.
Most of my co-workers were very laid back, yet hardworking. This made for a great work environment and allowed me to thrive as part of a strong team.
The hardest part of my job was memorizing the codes for every produce item in the store and being able to identify the item to which it belonged to. If that doesn't sound hard, I'll let you know that we had 7 different types of eggplant alone, all with different codes.

La gestion ne fait rien pour régler le problème a sa source elle préfère pousser d'avantage les employés présents ce qui est un non sens.
Le problème ce n'est pas tant le salaire même s'il pourrait être plus élevé mais le manque de respect des gérants et assistants gérants qui blâment les employés présents au lieu de gérer les problèmes d'absentéisme avec les employés qui ne se présentent pas. Ils ont tellement peur de les perdre qu'ils finissent pas perdre leurs meilleurs employés.
En gros les employés présents n'ont pas à subir les conséquences du manque de personnel.
Les employés présents ne peuvent pas continuellement travailler pour deux et avoir tout les blâmes. Une bonne façon de perdre les rares employés qui font tous leur possibles.
Par aiilleurs, Metro parler beaucoup de l'importance de garder son espace de travail propre mais ils ne donnent au employés pas suffisament de temp pour nettoyer convenablement leur espace de travail de même que l'équipement utilisé. Vous êtes poussez continuellement c'est presque de l'esclavage.

Superstore with great customer service and quality products
A typical day at my previous workplace would include working with cash, handling debit and credit transactions, bagging grocery items for customers, and giving customer service help when needed. As well as learning to work in a fast-paced environment as a cashier, I was also trained in the Floral Department, where I would clean, water and care for the plants and flowers, provide customer's with information about them, as well as wrapping and arranging bouquets. The management at Metro was overall accommodating and professional, but I felt as though regulations and instructions would change often, and employee's were not always informed correctly, causing miscommunication in the workplace. I found the hardest part of my job had to do with the renovations that the Metro has undergone from October 2016 to around May 2017. It was difficult to work during this time due to the change in placement of items ( different aisles, sections moved, etc.), and due to the fact a lot more attentiveness and help was needed for the customers to have a good experience at the store. The most enjoyable part of the job for me was the social aspect. There were many regular customers and new customers that I got to help and communicate with during my time at work, and I feel as though the social aspect of any job that involves customer service is important. Socializing with and acknowledging the business customers are providing your store with is a great way to create customer loyalty.

Would NOT recommend. Management is unprofessional, disorganized and seems to have no clue what is going on. There is no communication what so ever. I often walk into shifts to new information popping up overnight that is very vital to me doing my job correctly, with not a single word from management. Schedules often get posted with the wrong dates causing confusion. On occasion my pay has been late, and when I call to try and get an answer i'm met with attitude and no answer/explanation. Depending on store calls ins may or may not be a problem, at my store if i called in i got a call back from management telling me i need to come in. If i refuse, the call turns into borderline harassment.
The job itself is easy and i enjoy the customers, but we are constantly short staffed. Not because we don't have enough staff, but for some reason management does not schedule appropriately. We are often left without a self checkout attendant and one cashier for close... ONE. That person is now left to work the register, self checkout, clean for close, and the phones/desk if the desk person isn't available while doing their job.
This all depends on the store and the management you get. But the lack of protection Metro has for its employees working the front lines during COVID-19 compared to other stores, should tell you something.

According to Daft’s (2014) symptoms of structural deficiencies, the pharmacy division is suffering from three symptoms; delayed decision-making, declines in employee performance, and great conflict. A series of recent issues that occurred are the cause of these symptoms and they are all in connection. Employees who work at store-level and the distribution centers are unionized and are protected. The agreement contract between the union and the organization has ended in October 2017, and the company has not reached an agreement to date. This delay in the decision has caused the union to conduct a vote to strike with 97% of employees in favor. A conflict that has diminished the morale of those who are in direct contact with customers. This type of environment may be incompatible with the pharmacy division and could pose a risk to its bottom-line. Another type of pressure posed on the pharmacy division is the minimum wage hike that was initiated this year, costing Metro around 45 to 50 million dollars this year (O’Kane, 2017), the organization plans to fight back by introducing automation and shortening business hours (Marowits, 2018)
There is a hierarchy of authority, a formal reporting system, rules and regulations, and the decisions are being made by top management alone which are then funneled down to the store level. As mentioned earlier, this structure has created a ‘backlog’ of decisions that needed to be made in a timely fashion.

Promotion happens only when a position opens up, which sometimes might take a few years. You'll need to put a formal application in and promoted if you are capable of doing the job.

before covid was dental benefits after 4 years of work , and as soon as you work 4 years many store managers doesn't give enough hours to use benefits.
