KIND AND LEVEL OF WORK
The Branch Librarian, employed by Wapiti Regional Library, is responsible for the delivery of public library service to the community. All operational and administrative library duties are the responsibility of the Branch Librarian. They are thoroughly knowledgeable of library policies and procedures plus have a comprehensive understanding of the region. They work with minimal supervision. Work methods are governed by established procedures, but the employee must be able to exercise independent judgment, initiative and work cooperatively with others. Accuracy is essential. The Branch Librarian acts as secretary to the local board, and must be able to plan, schedule, train and supervise staff. He/she must demonstrate leadership skills, promote the library, and work effectively with the board and public.
DUTIES
- Attend all board meetings and act as recording secretary to the local board and committees.
- Responsible for advising the local board and implementing all regional and local policies and procedures.
- Responsible for the efficient operation of the library as established in the Wapiti Branch Manual including manual and automated circulation, reference and interlibrary loan services, overdue procedures, mail and supervision of staff.
- Responsible for preparing accurate minutes, statistics and reports.
- Maintenance of manual and/or automated records.
- Assist the board in preparation of the local library budget.
- Responsible for library programs and special events plus actively promote the library through regular contact with community groups, schools, and local councils.
- Participate in staff training (i.e. Branch Workshop) and any other duties as assigned by the local library board.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY & SKILLS
- Completion of grade twelve (12) or G.E.D.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work cooperatively; be diplomatic and flexible.
- Ability to work positively with board, staff, volunteers, and patrons.
- Ability to teach, supervise, delegate tasks and demonstrate leadership skills.
- Accurate clerical and bookkeeping skills; thorough and accurate in maintaining minutes, statistics, and reports.
- Ability to keep regular library hours.
- Maintain confidentiality with respect to the affairs of library patrons and users of library programs and services.
- Able to learn assigned tasks; ability to organize work and meet deadlines.
- Present an acceptable Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check before being offered a position in a Wapiti Regional Library branch.
DESIRABLE TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
- Computer literate including familiarity with the Windows operating system, email,
- Microsoft Word and Excel. Able to search the internet.
- Previous public library and/or office experience in an automated environment.
- Previous experience with library programming.
