Job Overview
The Junior Welder/Fitter is responsible for supporting fitting, welding, tacking, grinding, and assembly work in a custom steel fabrication shop environment. Working under the direction of the Welding Supervisor and experienced team members, this role assists with preparing, fitting, and welding steel components according to drawings, work instructions, and company quality standards.
This position is suitable for a candidate with basic welding and fabrication experience, recent trade school or welding program training, or early hands-on shop experience. The successful candidate must be safety-focused, willing to learn, and able to work in a fast-paced production environment.
Responsibilities
- Assist with fitting, tacking, welding, grinding, and assembling custom steel parts and components according to drawings and work instructions.
- Support experienced welders and fitters with material preparation, layout, part positioning, fit-up, and assembly.
- Read and follow basic fabrication drawings, work orders, weld symbols, measurements, and instructions in both metric and imperial units.
- Perform basic GMAW/MIG welding, tacking, and related welding support tasks under supervision, based on skill level and shop requirements.
- Clean, grind, deburr, and prepare steel parts before and after welding or fitting operations.
- Use basic measuring and layout tools such as tape measures, squares, levels, clamps, and other shop tools to check dimensions and alignment.
- Assist with moving, staging, and positioning materials safely using overhead cranes or other material-handling equipment when trained and authorized.
- Follow OHSA and company safety procedures, including proper use of PPE and safe work practices around welding, grinding, cutting, and material handling.
- Accurately clock in and out of work orders in accordance with shop procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Communicate questions, drawing concerns, quality issues, or safety concerns to the Welding Supervisor or lead hand.
Requirements
- Previous experience or training in welding, fitting, fabrication, manufacturing, or a related trades program is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of GMAW/MIG welding, tacking, grinding, steel preparation, and general fabrication practices.
- Ability to read and follow basic drawings, work instructions, measurements, and layout details in both metric and imperial units.
- Basic math and measuring skills for layout, fit-up, and dimensional checks.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, grinders, clamps, measuring tools, and other basic shop equipment.
- Willingness to learn proper fit-up, weld preparation, weld quality standards, and company shop procedures.
- Experience with overhead cranes, forklifts, or rigging is an asset, but training may be provided.
- Strong attention to detail, positive attitude, and ability to follow direction from supervisors and experienced team members.
- Commitment to working safely and following OHSA and company safety procedures, including proper use of PPE.
Assets
- CWB welding certification or previous welding test experience.
- Forklift or overhead crane certification.
- Experience in steel fabrication, structural steel, platework, or custom manufacturing.
- Familiarity with weld symbols, steel grades, fabrication drawings, or JobBOSS².
- Completion of a welding, fabrication, or related trades program.
Schedule
Full-time, Monday to Friday. Regular working hours are Monday to Thursday from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM and Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Additional hours may occasionally be required based on operational needs and will be paid in accordance with applicable employment standards.
