Controller – Gear Equipment

Gear brings innovative and flexible services and equipment to the Greater Toronto and Vancouver Areas and is also home of Mecalac equipment. We offer rental, sales, and service of this new versatile line of excavators, loaders, dumpers, and compactors, including specialized rail-based equipment.

Compensation: 100-110K (Based on qualifications, experience and relevant skills)
This position reports to the President of the company.
Responsibilities:
- Developing short, medium, and long-term plans with defined action plans to drive and ensure Company self-sufficiency for accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general accounting, budgeting and financial planning and analysis.
- Lead and drive the on-going optimization and refinement of the ERP systems to ensure that organizational needs are fully met, including on-going end-use training of Gear personnel on systems usage.
- Working under direction of the Vice-President, Finance for Clearway, to develop a scheduled monthly financial reporting package to be delivered for review prior to publishing to internal and third-party investors.
- Overseeing processes within the Finance areas to ensure customer billings and receipts and company expenditures are completely, accurately, and timely recorded. Support the timely collection and payment of customer, vendor, and sales tax accounts, including management of any applicable holdbacks or discounts.
- Reviewing monthly and annual sales and income tax and other statutory filings for completeness and accuracy. As required, ensure support is received from third-party providers to ensure timely and accurate resolution of any sales or income tax-related issues.
- Driving month-end close processes to ensure the maintenance of complete and accurate general ledger and other accounting records and the timely production of monthly internal management and investor reports, including financial analysis for actual results and expenditures as measured against the annual budget and quarterly forecasts.
- Managing the development and implementation of the approach, templates and timelines pertaining to the annual budget, quarterly forecasts, and consolidated results. Acting as the liaison between Finance and the operations and sales areas to provide quality control on departmental inputs.
- Overseeing payroll processes to ensure payroll is completely and accurately calculated and recorded, including annual payroll tax compliance and reporting requirements.
- Managing the year-end external financial reporting process for the Company to ensure the accuracy and reliability of information used in reporting to shareholders, financial counterparties and income tax authorities.
- Supporting financial and income tax reporting requirements for the Gear parent and other shareholder holding companies.
- As required, support financing activities including submission of required associated documentation and business plans to financing partners.
- Providing support for all insurance-related activities (excluding employee group benefits coverage), including policy set-up and renewals, premium payments, claims management and other related activities.
- Developing, documenting, implementing, and evaluating internal controls processes to ensure appropriate segregation of duties with on-going training and monitoring provided to ensure compliance across the Company. Capitalize on automation opportunities to streamline processes and drive efficiencies.
- Leading quarterly and annual inventory count processes, while ensuring appropriate segregation of duties are maintained. This includes the scheduling and organization of physical counts by Operations staff; overseeing the investigation and reconciliation of identified discrepancies by Finance staff; and identification of process deficiencies and enhancement of processes to support real-time inventory accuracy and drive process improvements across the organization.
- Managing the inventory management and controls process to ensure that the Company has a balanced level of inventory on hand to support day-to-day operations needs while balancing cash management requirements.
- Providing oversight of Gear’s IT systems, including infrastructure and hardware procurement, and through the management of third-party service provider to ensure timely, on-going support requirements for ERP systems, cyber security, and hardware set-up and maintenance.
- Providing on-going training, mentorship, and development to Finance staff within the Gear organization to encourage professional development, skill and knowledge growth around new processes, improvements, and other changes. Review work as required to provide opportunities for assessment and feedback through on-going dialogue to help set clear, measurable objectives and manage expectations.

Requirements:
- Post-secondary degree / diploma, or recognized equivalent in Finance, Commerce or Business
- Accounting designation, preferable CPA / CA
- 10-12 years of progressive Finance experience, including a minimum of 3-5 years in a managerial role, preferably in equipment rentals/sales/service, construction or similar environment
- Expertise in the management of financial controls and processes with financial reporting tools
- Strong knowledge of Canadian GAAP / IFRS
- Experience in Canadian sales taxation reporting and insurance
- Well-developed interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
- Strong critical thinking skills and attention to detail
- Effective time management and organizational skills; can balance multiple concurrent projects and priorities
- A passionate desire to lead people, building a cohesive and high performing team
- A collaborator, able to build and develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
