YESS is a not-for-profit agency working with youth facing difficult realities. Based in Edmonton, our Youth Support Centre provides immediate and low-barrier 24/7 sleep support and individualized wrap-around supports for young people aged 15-24.
We work collaboratively within a network of care, focused on the prevention of youth homelessness by providing youth with the necessary supports to stabilize their housing, improve their wellbeing, build life skills, connect with community, and avoid re-entry into homelessness.

What You Will Do
The Team Lead is the on-site shift leader responsible for coordinating daily operations, supporting frontline staff, and ensuring safe, consistent, and high-quality service delivery for youth.
This role provides real-time leadership, decision-making, and support during shifts, ensuring program structure, safety, and youth flow are maintained. The Team Lead plays a critical role in intake supervision, documentation quality, and data collection, while acting as the first point of escalation for staff.
The Team Lead works closely with the Safety & Stabilization Manager, who provides overall staff management, scheduling, and system oversight, while the Team Lead ensures execution and excellence on the floor.

Key Responsibilities
Shift Leadership & Coordination (CORE FUNCTION)
- Lead day-to-day shift operations within the shelter and stabilization program.
- Coordinate staff assignments, roles, and coverage during the shift.
- Ensure safe coverage at all times.
- Manage youth flow across spaces (intake, dorms, common areas, programming).
- Maintain structure, routines, and expectations for youth and staff.
- Act as the first point of escalation for staff concerns and incidents.
- Communicate key updates, risks, and priorities during shift transitions.
- Ensure staff breaks are scheduled, taken, and properly documented in accordance with organizational policies and employment standards.
- Monitor shift flow to ensure coverage is maintained while staff are on breaks.
- Address barriers to staff taking breaks and adjust coverage as needed.
- Ensure staff accountability for reviewing and staying up to date with internal communications (e.g., emails, shift updates) and applying them in practice.
- Ensure safety rounds are completed on time, properly documented, and aligned with program standards.
- Ensure all common areas are maintained in a clean, safe, and organized condition throughout the shift.
- Monitor staff responsibilities related to cleaning, organization, and shared space upkeep.
Real-Time Decision Making & Crisis Leadership
- Lead response to incidents, crises, and safety concerns on shift.
- Make timely decisions regarding:
- Admissions and intake flow.
- Youth behavior and safety.
- Staff deployment during high-risk situations.
- Support staff in de-escalation and crisis intervention.
- Ensure dignity, safety, and trauma-informed practice are maintained at all times.
- Escalate complex or high-risk situations to the Manager when required.
Intake Supervision & Quality Control
- Oversee intake process during shift to ensure:
- Timely and accurate completion.
- Consistency with program standards.
- Support Safety & Stabilization Workers in completing intake forms and initial assessments.
- Ensure key information is clearly captured to support:
- Safety planning.
- Youth placement and flow.
- Transition to Wellness supports.
Data Collection & Documentation Oversight
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of:
- Shift logs.
- Case notes.
- Incident reports.
- Intake documentation.
- Monitor documentation quality across staff during shift.
- Provide real-time feedback and coaching to improve documentation standards.
- Ensure all data is entered correctly into systems.
- Track and communicate key shift data, including:
- Number of youth served.
- Intakes and discharges.
- Incidents and safety concerns.
- Flag trends or concerns to the Manager.
Staff Support & On-Shift Coaching
- Provide guidance, direction, and support to Safety & Stabilization Workers during shifts.
- Coach staff in:
- Crisis response and de-escalation.
- Youth engagement and relationship-building.
- Documentation and intake processes.
- Support onboarding of new staff, students, and volunteers on shift.
- Model trauma-informed, professional, and consistent practice.
- Promote accountability while maintaining a supportive team environment.
Program Structure, Safety & Environment
- Maintain a safe, clean, and structured environment.
- Ensure building checks, safety checks, and routines are completed.
- Monitor adherence to program expectations and youth participation.
- Ensure consistent application of boundaries, expectations, and consequences.
- Promote a calm, respectful, and predictable environment.
Communication & Coordination
- Maintain clear communication with:
- Staff on shift.
- Incoming/outgoing shifts.
- Manager.
- Liaise with internal programs (Wellness, Food, Diversion and Transition) to support youth pathways.
- Support coordination of youth access to services and programming.
- Ensure key information is shared to support continuity of care.

Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, or a related field (or equivalent experience) is an asset.
- 2+ years of experience working with high-risk or at-risk youth.
- Experience in:
- Crisis intervention and de-escalation.
- Shelter or residential settings.
- Trauma-informed care.
- Experience supporting or guiding staff or peers in a leadership capacity.
- Strong understanding of:
- Youth homelessness.
- Mental health and addictions.
- Program structure and safety practices.
- Experience with documentation systems (e.g., ETO) is an asset.
What You Bring
- Valid First Aid Certificate completed within the last twelve months.
- Suicide intervention, harm reduction, trauma-informed practice, and crisis intervention training are considered an asset.
- Clear Police Information Check (PIC) and Child Intervention Record Check (CIRC), both obtained within the last six months.
