About the Role
The Building Care, Health and Safety team member role involves performing a variety of maintenance tasks, conducting routine inspections, and promptly addressing repairs, maintaining the cleanliness, hygiene, and physical upkeep of CFOC-DOC buildings, common areas, sleeping rooms, washrooms, laundry, kitchen, and exterior. The ideal candidate will have a strong attention to detail, excellent problem-solving skills, and a commitment to maintaining a welcoming and well-maintained environment, including interactions with patrons, tenants, parishioners and visitors.
What You'll Do
Daily cleaning
- Clean and sanitize all common areas daily - including but not limited to hallways, stairwells, entrances, exits, and outdoor immediate areas
- Clean and sanitize all washrooms and shower facilities to a high standard, multiple times daily as needed
- Sweep, mop and sanitize the kitchen in coordination with the Food and Nutrition team
- Empty garbage and recycling in all areas daily, and manage waste disposal per organizational and municipal requirements
- Restock washroom supplies, soap dispensers, and hygiene products throughout the day
- Manage laundry services in coordination with the Shelter Care Team, washing, drying, and folding communal linens, towels, and cleaning cloths
Maintenance and building upkeep
- Conduct daily visual inspections of the building, identifying maintenance issues, safety hazards, broken fixtures, plumbing concerns, and pest indicators
- Report all maintenance issues to the Building Care, Health and Safety Manager promptly using the designated reporting methods
- Perform minor maintenance tasks within scope: replacing light bulbs, tightening fixtures, touching up paint, unblocking drains
- Assist with receiving deliveries and organizing storage areas
- Maintain the cleaning supply inventory, tracking stock and flagging replenishment needs before supplies run out
- Perform weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual clean-ups as needed
- Snow removal and salting as needed
Health and safety compliance
- Follow all WHMIS protocols for handling, labelling, storing, and disposing of cleaning chemicals
- Use appropriate PPE at all times — gloves, masks, eye protection as required by the task
- Comply with all Durham Region Public Health standards relevant to residential facility sanitation
- Safely dispose of any sharps and report biohazard concerns or health and safety risks to the Building Care, Health & Safety Manager immediately
What You Bring
Required
- Experience in commercial, institutional, or residential cleaning: a shelter, group home, school, hotel, or healthcare facility
- WHMIS training, current certification or willingness to complete before start date
- Physical ability to perform the full range of cleaning tasks throughout a shift, including lifting, bending, and sustained movement
- Reliability and consistency, this role requires showing up on time, every shift, because others depend on it
- Comfort and respect when working alongside people who are experiencing homelessness, mental or physical illnesses, and housing insecurity
- Basic written communication to complete maintenance logs, submit Incident Reports etc.
- Ability to establish connections while maintaining personal boundaries
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and anti-oppressive practice
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check
- Flexibility for some evening or weekend hours as required based on program needs.
- Valid Crisis Prevention Intervention Certification or equivalent
- Valid First Aid Certification
Asset
- Experience in a shelter, residential care, or community services facility specifically
- Familiarity with infection prevention and control (IPAC) protocols
- Experience with commercial laundry equipment
- Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record
- Knowledge of pest prevention and reporting in a residential environment
- Background in advocacy, community organizing, or public education on social issues
- Mental Health First Aid Certification
- ASIST Certification
- Technical Proficiency – in minor repairs.
- HVAC Systems: Understanding heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
- Plumbing: Knowledge of plumbing systems, including repairs and installations.
- Electrical Systems: Basic electrical skills for troubleshooting and fixing issues.
- Carpentry for repairs and installations.
- Painting: Skill in preparing surfaces and applying paint.
