JOB TITLE – MATERNITY CARE WORKER

FULL-TIME, FIXED TERM (ending March 2027)

SALARY - $52,000.00

JOB SUMMARY

The Maternity Care Worker is an integral member of the Kenhtè:ke Midwives team, providing compassionate postpartum support and traditional family support to clients and families in their homes. Working closely with the Midwifery Team, the Maternity Care Worker promotes confidence, connection and a positive transition into parenthood by providing practical assistance, breastfeeding support, parenting education, emotional encouragement, and connections to community resources. Through the sharing of traditional knowledge and culturally grounded care, this role empowers families, supports maternal and newborn well-being, and helps foster confidence during the first six weeks of a client’s postpartum period.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS:

POSTPARTUM CLIENT & NEWBORN CARE – APPROX 20%

Provide postpartum support to clients and families from birth through six weeks postpartum, with an emphasis on traditional parenting and maternal self-care practices
Monitor maternal and newborn well-being during home visits
Complete newborn weight checks
Assist families with newborn care, including bathing, dressing, diapering, soothing, and feeding techniques
Answer client questions regarding normal postpartum recovery and newborn development
Identify abnormal postpartum conditions or concerns and immediately report them to the Midwifery Team
Complete the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) screening as directed and report concerns to the Midwifery Team

BREASTFEEDING & PARENT EDUCATIONS – APPROX 20%

Provide breastfeeding education and support during home visits and case conferences
Educate families on safe sleep practices, swaddling, baby wearing, car seat safety, infant feeding, and newborn care
Support parents in developing confidence in caring for their newborn
Teach practical life skills that promote family wellness, including meal preparation and newborn routines

TRADITIONAL & CULTURALLY GROUNDED CARE – APPROX 20%

Share traditional parenting knowledge and cultural practices in a respectful, supportive, trauma informed, and family centered manner
Promote traditional approaches to maternal wellness and postpartum recovery
Support the integration of cultural teachings into each family’s postpartum experience

FAMILY SUPPORT & COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS – APPROX 20%

Provide emotional support, encouragement, and companionship to postpartum clients and their families.
Assist families with light household tasks that support postpartum recovery, including laundry, meal preparation, and infant care while the parent rests or attends to personal needs.
Connect families with appropriate community resources and programs, including Healthy Babies Healthy Children, parenting groups, food security programs, and other available supports.
Collaborate with community agencies and service providers under the guidance of the Midwifery Team.

DOCUMENTATION & COMMUNICATION – APPROX 10%

Maintain accurate, timely, and complete client documentation in accordance with clinic standards.
Communicate observations, concerns, and client needs promptly to the Midwifery Team.
Participate in case conferences and interdisciplinary discussions as required.

PROGRAM & OPERATIONAL SUPPORT = APPROX 10%

Prepare postpartum gift bags for clients.
Maintain inventory of postpartum supplies and educational materials.
Complete newborn footprints and photographs for the clinic's baby tree.
Assist with additional program activities that support the delivery of postpartum services.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

SKILLS REQUIRED

Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build trusting relationships with clients and families.
Compassionate, respectful, and non-judgmental approach to supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Self-motivated with strong organizational and time management skills; able to prioritize tasks and work independently within a busy clinic environment.
Mature, professional disposition that fosters trust, respect, and cultural safety.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
Basic computer skills and the ability to maintain accurate client documentation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent.
Post Secondary Diploma in Indigenous Social Work, or equivalent would be considered an asset
Knowledge of traditional maternal, postpartum, and parenting teachings and practices, with an emphasis on Onkwehón:we knowledge.
Basic knowledge of postpartum care, infant development, breastfeeding support, and newborn care.
Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check upon hire.
Valid Ontario driver's licence and access to reliable transportation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong understanding of First Nations community resources, programs, and supports.
Experience providing family support, maternal-child programming, or postpartum care is considered an asset.
Knowledge of Indigenous cultural safety and trauma-informed care principles is considered an asset.
Given the nature and location of this work, preference may be given to qualified Indigenous candidates in accordance with section 24(1)(a) of the Ontario Human Rights Code
Experience working in a First Nations community setting, within a health or wellness practice is a critical asset
High level of knowledge and awareness of First Nations’ community needs

Pay: $52,000.00 per year
