As a rapidly growing school division in Alberta, Rocky View Schools (RVS) supports the educational needs of more than 29,600 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in 53 schools to ensure they learn, belong and succeed.

RVS is situated on the traditional territories of the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta including the Siksikaitsitapi (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, Amskapi Pikuni), the Tsuutina, the Îyâxe Nakoda Nations (Bearspaw, Chiniki, Goodstoney), and the Rocky View Métis District.

The Opportunity

RVS invites applications for a Director of Human Resources position at the Education Centre in Airdrie, Alberta. The position will commence as soon as a suitable candidate is found.

As a member of Rocky View Schools (RVS) and Human Resources (HR) leadership teams, the Director of HR plays a crucial role in developing and implementing HR strategies and programs in alignment with RVS’ strategic plan. The Director of HR supervises, coordinates and assists with the efficient delivery of all HR advisory, employee relations, wellness and employee health services within the HR department.

Responsibilities

Develops and supports organizational strategies by establishing HR goals that match organizational needs and goals, and the RVS Strategic Plan.
Supports the coordination of work, supervision and professional learning within the HR department, specifically overseeing the employee health team, the RVS wellness program, and the HR Advisory team.
In collaboration with the Associate Superintendent of HR, monitors the actions of RVS employees and oversees performance management, progressive discipline, conflict management, labour relations and mediation.
Manages special projects and conducts investigations as delegated by the Associate Superintendent of HR.
Continuously evaluates and improves HR functions, policies and procedures to ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations and identify opportunities for continual improvement.
Provides guidance and support to school leaders, managers and employees on HR policies, procedures, and employment-related matters.
Develops and implements comprehensive employee wellness programs and initiatives to promote a healthy and positive work environment.
Ensures RVS employees are evaluated according to RVS Administrative Procedures and timelines.
Works collaboratively with the Director of Talent to ensure seamless collaboration between the Talent and HR teams.
Initiates and leads HR practices and objectives that will ensure the high-level functioning of a proactive and responsive HR department (i.e. ongoing review of HR metrics, workflow, guidelines, processes).
Ensures accurate employment data is continually gathered, analyzed and provided to appropriate stakeholders.
Acts as a resource for the ongoing review of the Terms of Employment for Support and Exempt Employees.
Works with all personnel in furthering understanding and interpretation of the Collective Agreement for teachers and the Terms of Employment for Support and Exempt Employees.
Collaborates with members of the HR and payroll teams regarding employee matters such as employee changes, short-term disability (STD), long-term disability (LTD), remuneration and benefits.
Monitors the job description review, evaluation and salary comparison processes.
Provides oversight, advice and assistance to the employee health team regarding leaves, modified return to work and complex accommodation situations.
In collaboration with the Associate Superintendent of HR, monitors and continually reviews all facets of the absence management processes, including leave approvals.
Supports ongoing review and implementation (as required) of Human Resources Management Systems (HRMS) modules.

Education and Experience

Master's Degree in Human Resources, Business, Education, Leadership, or a related field is required
Additional formal training such as an HR Certificate, HR Diploma and/or a Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation is considered an asset
Minimum of 5 years’ related experience, preferably within a school division HR team
Minimum of 7 years’ leadership experience supervising and mentoring employees to achieve high performance
Experience in labour relations, collective bargaining, disability management, conflict management and/or mediation is considered an asset
An equivalent combination of Education and Experience may be considered

Knowledge and Skills

Outstanding interpersonal skills, with proven experience leading high-performance and dynamic teams
Proven track record of supervising and mentoring employees to achieve high performance
Highly effective communication and conflict management skills
Proven ability to establish strong, collaborative external and internal working relationships
Demonstrated strengths in planning, delegating, setting priorities, creating efficiencies and attention to detail
Flexible and detail orientated, and able to manage multiple priorities at times in ambiguous contexts /situations
Proven ability to think and plan in consideration of the big picture
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and web-based applications
