About Us
Iris Kirby House is a non-profit charitable organization that provides a safe haven for women and children who are experiencing intimate partner violence. The organization consists of two shelters, Iris Kirby House located in St. John’s, NL, O’Shaughnessy House in Carbonear, NL and second stage housing offered in both communities. In addition to providing shelter, staff provide individual supports, child and family support services, outreach services, housing supports, empowerment programs and 24/7 crisis support line via phone or online chat.
Position
Iris Kirby is currently seeking Casual/On-Call for Transition House Counsellors for Nightshifts to join our team at our St. John’s location.
General and Specific Knowledge
You must have specific knowledge on issues related to family violence, the cycle of abuse, and the empowerment model. You must also acquire sound knowledge of trauma informed perspectives with an understanding of Harm Reduction principles. Other valuable areas in which you would possess a vast array of knowledge and/or skills may include crisis and suicide intervention, counselling techniques, legislative policies of community agencies for the purpose of advocating for clients/residents, mental health and addictions, First Aid, and CPR.
Some of the duties entailed in this position may include (but is not limited to) crisis intervention; non-judgmental support; advocacy; referral services; crisis and text line coverage; record keeping and file writing; group facilitation; programming, public speaking, kitchen and cleaning duties, and other related duties.
Competencies: Includes strong conflict resolution, counselling, computer skills, oral and written communication skills.
Formal Education and/or Certification(s) Years of Experience
You must hold a minimum undergraduate degree in Social Science, Social Work, Psychology, or related field. Accompanied by a minimum of 1-2 years of experience. We will also consider a combination of a post-secondary education with extensive residential experience.
Salary: CG-33, as per the CUPE Transition Houses and Group Homes Master Collective Agreement.

Relief roles often serve as a meaningful entry point to longer-term opportunities, allowing individuals to build skills and gain experience within the organization. While this is a relief position with no guaranteed hours, successful candidates must be able to support a flexible schedule. Availability may be required at various times, including evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, holidays, and on short notice.
