POSITION DETAILS:
TITLE: Program Instructor I
DEPARTMENT: Community Services Department
CURRENT RATE OF PAY: $26.59 per hour plus 15% in lieu of benefits
HOURS OF WORK: 0-20 hours per week, normally afterschool hours. Seasonal, September-June pursuant to the Collective Agreement.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The incumbent shall assist the Rec and Roll Programmer in the implementation of the City of Williams Lake’s Afterschool Care program. Opportunities to assist and direct related child and youth programs are available. The Program Instructor 1 is focused on providing, directing, and leading children and youth (4-12 years) with the opportunity to participate in a variety of fun and educational activities.
SUPERVISION:
Responsible to the Director of Community Services, under the direction of the Recreation Program Coordinator-Child and Youth, and the Youth Care Programmer.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure that daily activities are varied, age appropriate, stimulating, challenging and safe.
- Interact directly with children using age-appropriate language and follow pre-determined procedures for dealing with behavior challenges.
- In conjunction with the Rec and Roll Programmer, plan a monthly schedule which includes field trips, special guests, arts and crafts, music, games, stories, and drama. This position may be directed to purchase daily supplies and equipment for the program.
- Maintain regular communication with the Rec and Roll Programmer and other Program Instruction staff. This will include planning staff and parent meetings on occasion.
- Assist with the set up and take down of program equipment, cleaning and sanitizing the spaces utilized by the program. Disinfection of high touch surface areas on a frequent basis is a daily task.
- Coordinate, prep and distribute healthy snacks daily for the participants.
- Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum Grade 12 education.
- Minimum 19 years of age.
- Clean criminal record check, including Vulnerable Persons.
- Certification, education and training in Child and Youth Care required.
- A valid B.C. Driver’s License.
- A valid First Aid Certificate.
- Ability to deal courteously, tactfully, and diplomatically with parents, children, municipal and provincial licensing officers.
- Knowledgeable in a variety of children’s programming, such as crafts, sports, music, and storytelling.
- Ability to be a motivated and energetic individual; enjoy working with children ages 4-12.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS
- Current Early Childhood Education Certificate and/or equivalent post-secondary education.
- One-year practical experience in Education Assistance, After School Care Programming or Children and Youth Programs.
