About the Role
Global News Toronto is seeking two full-time Digital Broadcast Journalist (Radio News Anchor/Reporters) to join our integrated newsroom.
Reporting to the Executive Producer, Global Toronto, with a dotted-line relationship to the Managing Editor, the successful candidate will anchor and produce concise, accurate and compelling hourly radio newscasts on 640 Toronto while contributing original journalism across other Global News platforms.
The role is based at 81 Barber Greene Road and is part of the team responsible for weekday hourly radio newscasts throughout the morning, midday, and evening hours.
Scheduled shifts may include early mornings, days and afternoons, with evenings, weekends and holidays as news coverage requires.
The successful candidate will work closely with the assignment desk, digital team, producers and journalists across Global Toronto.
This is a Group 4 position under the current collective agreement.
You will contribute by:
- Anchoring, writing and producing clear, accurate and engaging live radio newscasts for Global News radio stations and audio platforms.
- Monitoring local, provincial, national and international news; identifying the most relevant stories for our audiences; and responding quickly to breaking news.
- Updating rundowns and copy throughout the shift while meeting multiple, frequent deadlines.
- Gathering and verifying information through research, interviews, wire services, newsroom sources and original reporting.
- Writing, voicing and producing radio reports, wraps, clips and other audio content.
- Adapting reporting and radio copy for GlobalNews.ca and other digital platforms, including updating developing stories.
- Pitching original story ideas and actively participating in daily editorial discussions and assignment meetings.
- Contributing reporting, voice work, live hits or other content for television and video platforms when required.
- Working collaboratively with the assignment desk, digital journalists, producers, technical teams and newsrooms across Ontario, and throughout the Global News network.
- Using newsroom audio, editing and publishing systems, including Burli or comparable radio-news software.
- Maintaining Global News journalistic, legal and editorial standards across all platforms.
- Supporting special coverage, major breaking-news events and evolving audio products or distribution channels.
- Performing other duties as required.
Skills and experience you will bring:
- Post-secondary education in journalism, broadcasting or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience in radio or broadcast journalism, including anchoring, writing and producing live newscasts.
- A strong, credible on-air delivery and the ability to communicate breaking and developing news clearly and calmly.
- Exceptional news writing, copy-editing and storytelling skills, with a sharp ear for concise broadcast language.
- Strong news judgment and a thorough understanding of Toronto, Ontario and national news.
- The ability to verify information, make sound editorial decisions and work accurately under intense deadline pressure.
- Experience with digital publishing and an understanding of how to adapt journalism effectively across radio, web, social, television and video platforms.
- Familiarity with Burli or comparable radio newsroom and audio-editing systems is an asset.
- Strong interviewing, research, communication and organizational skills.
- The ability to work independently while contributing positively and collaboratively in an integrated newsroom.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities, technology, workflows and platform needs.
- A positive, solutions-oriented approach and strong problem-solving skills.
