POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Financial Officer plays a key role in strengthening the financial health and long-term sustainability of United Way Winnipeg through strategic financial planning, analysis, and reporting. This role helps ensure organizational resources are managed responsibly while providing leaders with the financial insight needed to make informed decisions.
Reporting to the President & CEO, with day-to-day support from the Vice-President, Operational Effectiveness, the Senior Financial Officer serves as a trusted advisor to the Strategic Leadership Team and supports the Finance, Audit and Operations Committee of the Board of Trustees. Working in close partnership with the Director, Finance, this role leads financial planning, forecasting, policy development, and financial analysis while helping modernize financial systems, reporting, and planning tools to better support the organization's future needs.
The Senior Financial Officer looks for opportunities to improve financial processes, strengthen reporting, and build practical tools that make financial information more accessible, meaningful, and useful for leaders across the organization.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Planning & Analysis

Lead the annual budgeting process and multi-year financial planning to support organizational priorities and accountability across business units

Develop financial forecasts, scenario plans, and variance analyses that provide timely insights for strategic decision-making

Build financial models to evaluate strategic initiatives, funding opportunities, and organizational investments

Monitor key financial indicators and translate complex financial information into meaningful insights for leaders across the organization
Financial Stewardship & Governance

Serve as a trusted financial advisor to the Strategic Leadership Team and Unit Leaders by providing strategic financial guidance and analysis

Support effective resource allocation to maximize organizational and community impact
-
Develop, review, and strengthen financial policies and practices to ensure compliance with non-profit accounting standards and sound governance
-
Support annual audits and the preparation of financial statements and related documentation
-
Assist the President & CEO in supporting the Finance, Audit and Operations Committee of the Board of Trustees through clear financial reporting and analysis
Financial Systems & Continuous Improvement

Lead initiatives to modernize financial systems, tools, and reporting processes that improve organizational effectiveness

Develop financial dashboards, reporting tools, and performance measures that enhance decision-making at all levels of the organization

Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, systems, and reporting practices while leading projects that support long-term organizational sustainability

Support organizational change initiatives related to financial planning, reporting, and financial management systems
Leadership & Collaboration

Collaborate closely with the Director, Finance, Strategic Leadership Team, and Unit Leaders to align financial planning with organizational priorities

Foster collaborative relationships across the organization to support effective financial decision-making and accountability

Contribute as a member of United Way Winnipeg's leadership community by supporting organizational priorities, responsible stewardship of resources, and a culture of continuous improvement

WHAT WILL HELP YOU SUCCEED

Strong financial planning, forecasting, and financial analysis expertise

The ability to translate complex financial information into clear, practical insights for diverse audiences

Experience building financial models and supporting strategic organizational decision-making

A collaborative leadership style with the ability to build strong relationships across departments and with senior leaders

Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and sound judgment

Experience leading financial system improvements, organizational change, and process modernization

Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines

A commitment to responsible stewardship, continuous improvement, and supporting organizational success
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Commerce, or a related discipline

Professional Accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) is required
-
Seven or more years of progressive experience in financial leadership, financial planning and analysis, strategic finance, or a related senior financial role
-
Demonstrated experience leading organization-wide budgeting, forecasting, long-range financial planning, and financial modelling
-
Experience leading the implementation or modernization of financial systems, budgeting tools, ERP platforms, or reporting environments
-
Experience leading complex organizational initiatives involving business process improvement and change management
-
Experience supporting executive leadership, Boards of Directors, Audit Committees, or governance processes is considered an asset
-
Experience within the non-profit or broader public sector, particularly in organizations using fund accounting or restricted funding models, is considered an asset
