Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator plays a key role in supporting civil construction projects by operating a variety of heavy machinery, such as excavators, loaders, skid steers, and dozers. This position is responsible for ensuring that equipment is operated safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project requirements and company procedures.
Operators are expected to perform routine inspections and maintenance, interpret site plans and grades, and work closely with supervisors and crew members to complete excavation and site work accurately and on schedule.
This role requires a strong safety mindset, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to adapt to changing job site conditions. The Heavy Equipment Operator must be dependable, physically fit, and capable of working outdoors in all weather. Success in this position relies on effective communication, teamwork, and the ability to work independently when required.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Safely and efficiently operate heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders, skid steers, dozers and other machinery as required
- Perform daily equipment inspections to ensure equipment is in safe and working order
- Fuel, grease, and conduct regular routine maintenance on equipment
- Maintain awareness of surroundings to ensure the safety of crew members and equipment on job sites
- Read and interpret site plans, grades, and instructions as needed for accurate excavation
- Communicate effectively with site supervisors and team members to ensure smooth project completion
- Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
- Follow all company health, safety, and environmental procedures
- Report equipment issues or unsafe site conditions promptly to supervisors
- Responsible for transportation to and from job sites
- Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE)
- General labour duties on site
- Other duties will be assigned as required
Desired Skills & Experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience operating heavy equipment, such as excavators, loaders, dozers and skid steers
- Prior experience in the excavating and civil construction industry is required
- Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings, locates, and set/check grades
- Safety-focused, with a solid understanding of job site hazards and safe operating practices
- WHMIS & Occupational Health & Safety Training required (or willingness to complete prior to starting)
- Working at Heights and First Aid certification are considered strong assets
- Team-orientated with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Capable of working independently with minimal supervision
- Dependable, punctual, and professional at all times
- Physically fit with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs, and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Basic mechanical knowledge to identify and report equipment issues when necessary
