Penalta is hiring an experienced Project Manager to lead a multi-site retail retrofit program for one of North America's largest retailers. You will run projects from pre-construction through close-out, working in operating store environments where the client's customers and staff are on site throughout the build.
This is hands-on, fast-paced retail construction. Tight windows, phased work, strict brand standards, and a client that expects steady communication and clean execution. You will be accountable for scope, budget, schedule, and team performance, and you will work directly with the client, subcontractors, consultants, and our site teams.
What You Will Do
- Lead retail retrofit and remodel projects from start to close-out with full accountability for scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety
- Plan and coordinate phased work in operating stores, including off-hours and overnight scopes, to keep the store trading while construction is underway
- Manage project financials including budgets, cost-to-complete reporting, forecasting, and change orders
- Build and maintain the client relationship through clear, regular communication and proactive issue resolution
- Hold subcontractors and suppliers to the client's brand standards, fixture specs, and quality expectations
- Lead and develop project teams including Assistant Project Managers and Project Coordinators
- Identify risks early, develop mitigation plans, and adjust schedules and resources to keep work on track
- Interpret drawings, specifications, and client construction standards to inform planning and methods
What You Need
Education and Experience
- Post-secondary education in construction management, engineering, or a related field
- Progressive experience in construction project management with a general contractor
- Direct experience on retail retrofit, big-box remodel, or rollout programs is strongly preferred
- Comfort working in occupied or operating commercial environments where the client's business continues during construction
- Proven track record managing multiple projects at once through full project lifecycle
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of construction documents, specifications, building codes, and Ontario regulatory requirements
- Experience with Procore or similar construction management software
- Proficiency in project scheduling, cost tracking, and financial reporting
- Familiarity with national retailer construction standards, fixture programs, and rollout protocols is an asset
Core Competencies
- Strong decision-making and technical judgment under pressure
- Clear written and verbal communication, including client-facing and executive-level reporting
- Ability to lead teams, manage competing priorities, and resolve conflicts effectively
- Strategic thinker who anticipates risks and develops mitigation plans proactively
- Customer-service mindset; understands that the store is open and the work has to respect that
