This is a permanent, 32-hour salaried day shift position which will require a flexible work schedule that responds to program and client needs. The position will work with client(s) in homelike settings in Maple Ridge, BC. Please note that all positions are typically 4 shifts per week and may include at least one weekend shift.
The salaried childcare worker will have the opportunity to pick up additional hours at the program hourly rate with a 6% addition on any additional hours for those hours only.
Services provided include crisis intervention, assessment, behavior management and life skills, on a one-to-one basis. The CYW works as part of a larger team of Youth Workers and provides direct support to the clients, staff and program coordinator. In emergencies, staff would be required to work at other locations other than their home programs, when necessary, at the discretion of the Program Coordinator, Manager or Director.
The Child and Youth Worker is required:
- To be familiar with and adhere to the Procedures and Policies of the agency.
- To be familiar with and adhere to the practices and procedures of the program.
- To deliver the program services to clients in accordance with government standards, acts, regulations and CARF accreditation.
- To set an example for others through personal behavior which is respectful of others and which models’ professional family and child service practices.
- To work towards a common vision and uphold the mission statement and philosophy of the agency.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Ensures safety and well-being of children and youth at the Care Setting.
2. Supports Youth in feeling comfortable and safe upon arriving at the Care Setting.
3. Actively works to get to know Youth better and to gather information about their needs and providing updated information on an ongoing basis to the Program Manager.
4. Builds trust with Youth who are hesitant to engage with service providers.
5. Facilitates positive connections to promote relationship building, based on a Youth’s needs and interests.
6. Participates in Youth’s assessments, Goal/Strategy setting, and program planning (where appropriate), and supports documenting, monitoring, and measuring progress.
7. Appropriately delivers or enables strategies established in the Youth’s SHSS Service Plan and/or other plans and planning materials.
8. Teaches and strengthens Youth’s skills in a socially and culturally appropriate manner through the use of daily routines and activities.
9. Provides Trauma-informed care (through behavior management attachment-based, relational or other appropriate evidence informed modalities) to Youth on a one-to-one and/or group basis by performing duties such as providing feedback on behavior, teaching coping techniques and adaptive behavior, and providing guidance and support.
10. Connects Youth with other supports and service providers to meet their needs, as applicable.
11. Provides care to Youth with mild to exceptional support needs in a staffed-resource setting, including Youth with behavioral challenges.
12. Provides emotional support and crisis intervention to Youth which may include non-violent physical interventions.
13. Supports Youth’s community inclusion (e.g. home, school, activities, family, and the community).
14. Ensures that Youth’s physical needs are met by performing duties such as assisting with basic physical hygiene, preparing meals, and administering medications as required in accordance with established policy, guidelines, procedures and instructions.
15. Maintains reports and other documentation such as logbooks, charts, daily activities on residents. Ensures that all required documentation is accurate, complete, timely and legible.
16. Carries out household duties such as meal preparation and household cleaning,
17. Accompanies Youth to appointments and community outings.
18. Recognizes potential crisis, analyzes such situations accurately, develops strategies to deal with such situations and informs their supervisor when incidents arise.
19. Ensures that all health and safety requirements are complete.
20. Provides emotional support and feedback to clients (and their families, where concerned). Assists in attending appointments and providing transportation when necessary.
21. Utilizes opportunities for positive family contacts involvement of family members and facilitates family counseling, where appropriate.
22. Takes responsibility for the correct use and maintenance of agency facilities and equipment.
23. Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
· A minimum 2-year relevant diploma or equivalent of education/experience working with children and youth with behavioral, attachment and other needs from a Trauma-informed lens.
· Specific training in behavioral modification, attachment-based parenting, harm reduction, cultural safety, first aid, crisis intervention and relationship-based interventions (Trauma-Informed Practice).
All Child and Youth Care Worker’s must possess:
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Demonstrated ability to teach skills and work effectively with others.
· Knowledge of theory, principles and practices in the field.
· Good time and general management skills.
· Knowledge of community resources.
· Effective interpersonal communication skills.
· Successfully completed MCFD Hub Clearance.
· Familiarity with use of computers and other electronic devices.
· First Aid certificate, and BC Class 5 Driver’s License/Abstract.
· Fully Vaccinated.
Additional qualifications include bronze medallion (lifeguard).
Additional Information:
The CYW is often required to work in a stressful environment dealing with clients in crisis. The ability to work independently and frequently under pressure is an ongoing expectation of this position. Direct delivery of program activities that require a moderate level of physical fitness, to carry out the duties effectively. This position often includes working weekends, evenings and holidays. In emergencies, staff would be required to work at other locations other than their home programs, when necessary, at the discretion of the Program Coordinator, Manager or Director.
Additional qualifications should include First Aid Certification, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training.
