About the Project
Cobalt Construction Inc. is seeking an experienced and safety-driven NCSO Site Safety Coordinator to support operations at the Faro Mine Remediation Project in Faro, Yukon. This project is one of the largest and most complex mine reclamation projects in Canada, focused on environmental remediation, contaminated site management, tailings dust control, and safe construction practices in a remote northern environment.
This position will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with site-specific health, safety, environmental, and emergency response requirements while supporting field crews, supervisors, subcontractors, and project management teams.
The successful candidate will be highly organized, proactive, and confident working in a fast-paced remote construction and reclamation environment involving contaminated materials, dust mitigation, excavation activities, and environmental monitoring.
Key Responsibilities
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture throughout all project activities.
- Ensure compliance with Yukon Occupational Health & Safety regulations, project specifications, client requirements, and company safety policies.
- Conduct daily field inspections, hazard assessments, FLHAs, toolbox meetings, and safety audits.
- Monitor and document compliance with site-specific Health & Safety Plans, Environmental Protection Plans, and contaminated site procedures.
- Support implementation of health and safety procedures associated with:
- Contaminated soils, tailings, and waste rock
- Dust suppression and tailings dust cover operations
- Potentially contaminated surface and groundwater exposure
- Excavation activities involving unknown or hazardous materials
- Emergency response and spill containment procedures
- Perform and document air quality monitoring and environmental monitoring activities.
- Maintain calibration, inspection, and documentation for monitoring equipment.
- Assist with respiratory protection programs, PPE compliance, respirator fit testing coordination, and decontamination procedures.
- Conduct incident investigations, near-miss reporting, corrective actions, and follow-up documentation.
- Assist supervisors and crews with development and review of safe work procedures and risk assessments.
- Ensure compliance with confined space, ground disturbance, excavation, and emergency response procedures.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness activities and participate in emergency response planning.
- Maintain accurate safety records, statistics, inspection reports, training records, and daily documentation.
- Provide mentorship and coaching to workers and supervisors regarding safe work practices.
- Liaise with client representatives, environmental teams, and project management regarding safety performance and compliance.
- Participate in site orientations and ongoing safety training initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Valid NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer) certification.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a dedicated construction or industrial safety role.
- Experience working on mine reclamation, contaminated sites, heavy civil, mining, or remote construction projects.
- Demonstrated experience with air quality monitoring and environmental monitoring procedures.
- Strong understanding of:
- Hazard identification and risk assessment
- Contaminated site safety procedures
- Emergency response planning
- Respiratory protection programs
- WHMIS and occupational health & safety legislation
- Incident investigation and reporting
- Valid Standard First Aid with CPR/AED (OFA or EMR considered an asset).
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence with clean abstract.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and digital safety reporting systems.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a remote camp environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on Yukon or northern remote projects.
- Experience with environmental remediation or contaminated materials handling.
- Training or certifications related to:
- Confined Space Entry
- Ground Disturbance
- Fall Protection
- H2S Alive
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)
- Incident Command Systems (ICS)
- Experience coordinating subcontractor safety compliance.
Working Conditions
- Remote camp-based position at the Faro Mine Remediation Project.
- Rotation schedule may include extended shifts, overtime, and weekend work.
- Work is performed in varying weather conditions and challenging northern terrain.
- Exposure to dust, contaminated materials, heavy equipment activity, and active construction environments.
- Must be physically capable of walking uneven terrain, climbing, lifting, and working outdoors for extended periods.
