Who you are
If you are a professional in the field of epidemiology, biostatistics, and public or occupational health, then the Health Sciences and Environmental Compliance Division is looking for you! We are seeking a passionate Radiation and Health Sciences Officer to provide leadership and expertise in epidemiology and radiation health sciences for the CNSC.
What you’ll do
Reporting to the Director, you will:
- Provide advice and assist in delivering the radiation and health sciences program;
- Stay up to date with and understand the tasks involved in research, including conceptualization, synthesis, analysis, checking for consistency, accuracy, and interpretation of extensive complex data and scientific journals and reports;
- Conduct assessments on the health consequences of radiation exposures;
- Assist with staff development and training;
- Participate in developing regulations and regulatory documents;
- Manage small research projects;
- Support national and international program activities;
- Participate in outreach activities and public meetings representing the CNSC to clarify, explain and discuss the CNSC position on radiation and health issues; and
- Prepare and deliver information as a subject matter expert at Commission Hearings and Meetings.
Essential Qualifications:
Education:
Master’s degree or higher in science, with specialization in one or more of the following areas: Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Dose Assessment, Public or Occupational Health, or an equivalent combination of education, experience and relevant knowledge as outlined in this work description.
Language Requirements:
English essential
Experience in :
- Critically reviewing, assessing, interpreting and summarizing scientific information on radiation sources and effects
- Managing research contracts and conducting research projects: design, data collection, data analysis, report writing, and presentation
- Using relevant computer applications (such as statistical analysis packages, databases and graphical applications)
- Advising and making recommendations to senior management on radiation health issues
- communicating risk to groups in one or more of the following areas: different levels of government, health professionals, industry, media, public, Indigenous Nations and communities and non-government organizations
Knowledge in:
- The sources and biological effects of radiation on humans
- Scientific principles and methods to assess the health effects of radiation
- Epidemiological principles, research designs, data sources, data collection, processing and analysis, interpretation, reporting and follow-up
- CNSC’s mandate and scope of work
- Nuclear Safety Control Act (NSCA), regulations and regulatory process including the Radiation Protection Regulations
- Reports and recommendations of international bodies on radiation protection
- Computer and statistical techniques to manipulate, examine and assess data

Asset Qualification:
- Knowledge in radiation epidemiology
- Knowledge in radiological dose modelling and pathway exposure analysis
- Knowledge in assessing radiological consequences to human health
- Experience publishing research in peer-reviewed scientific journals
- Experience presenting research at scientific conferences
- Knowledge of processes and functioning of nuclear facilities necessary to understand the environment in which Canadians may be exposed to radiation.
Operational Needs:
All CNSC staff are subject to the Mobility Directive.
