We’re seeking to hire a permanent, full-time Legal Counsel to join our mid-sized Legal team working out of EPCOR Tower in Edmonton, AB.
The corporate-commercial side of our team is well resourced and we’re looking for a strong Legal Counsel to work in and support other areas, including litigation, regulatory/compliance, and privacy. We know it’s rare for a person to have experience in all of these areas, but have had great experience with growing and developing Lawyers with a strong litigation or advocacy background.
This Legal Counsel position is an excellent opportunity to work and gain experience in a number of related areas, providing important strategic and operational legal advice to, and supporting Senior Counsel, advising EPCOR’s Canadian regulated and commercial businesses. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, flexible, and eager to learn, with an interest in developing a varied in-house practice to support EPCOR's business needs, with the potential over the medium to longer term to grow into a more specialized role. The role operates as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders, while helping to advance business objectives within a complex, regulated as well as a commercial environment.
What you’d be responsible for
In the role of Legal Counsel, you are accountable to the Deputy General Counsel and have the following key accountabilities (but are not limited to):

Provide legal advice and deliver services in a variety of practice areas, including litigation, regulatory/compliance, and privacy.

Work independently and directly manage a portfolio of files, while also supporting senior lawyers on more complex matters.

Conduct legal research to support advice, risk assessment, and decision-making.

Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Legal Services processes to align with EPCOR policies, standards, and risk mitigation practices.

Contribute to reports and briefing materials prepared for senior lawyers, the Deputy General Counsel, or General Counsel on litigation and regulatory and related matters.

Manage and instruct external legal counsel, including oversight of scope, performance, and associated costs.

Demonstrate a high-performance, disciplined, and self-directed work style, with a strong commitment to service excellence and collaboration.

Apply a safety-focused, accountable, and solutions-oriented approach to work, with an emphasis on continuous improvement and innovation.
What’s required to be successful

Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD).
- Member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta (or eligible for membership).
- 4+ years of continuous experience in a regulatory, litigation and/or administrative law practice.

A litigation or advocacy background provides a good foundation, along with the ability to assess risk, solve problems, and provide practical legal advice in a business environment.

Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to independently manage files and support senior lawyers on a diverse range of legal matters.

Experience in regulated or other infrastructure industries, would be an asset, but is not required.

Knowledge of any of labour relations/employment or OHS law would also be an asset, but is not required.

Knowledge of, or experience working in, the utilities or other regulated industries would be an asset, but is not required.

Excellent communication skills, including the ability to prepare briefing notes, regulatory submissions, litigation documentation, and executive materials.
- High degree of professional judgment, integrity, and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex, regulated environment.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong accountability, a proactive mindset, and the ability to balance legal risk management with operational practicality, while supporting EPCOR’s commitment to compliance, integrity, and public trust.
