Excavator Operator / Pipe Layer
Kenalex Construction Company Limited is seeking an experienced Excavator Operator / Pipe Layer to join our civil construction team.
Kenalex is an established open-shop contractor based in North Bay, Ontario. We are COR-certified and committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and team-oriented workplace. Our projects include civil infrastructure, site development, underground servicing, commercial construction, and institutional work throughout Northern Ontario.
Responsibilities
- Safely and efficiently operate excavators, dozers, loaders, skid steers, compactors, and other heavy equipment.
- Excavate and prepare trenches for water, sanitary, storm, and site-servicing installations.
- Install pipe, fittings, catch basins, maintenance holes, culverts, and related underground infrastructure.
- Complete pipe bedding, grading, compaction, backfilling, and site restoration.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, grades, elevations, slopes, and layout information.
- Work safely around existing utilities, structures, workers, traffic, and active facilities.
- Perform daily equipment inspections and routine preventative maintenance.
- Complete equipment logs, inspection records, and other required documentation.
- Identify and report equipment, safety, or site concerns promptly.
- Assist with general civil construction activities when required.
- Follow all Kenalex health and safety policies, site-specific procedures, and applicable regulations.
Qualifications
- Previous experience operating excavators on civil construction and underground servicing projects.
- Demonstrated experience installing water, sanitary, and storm systems.
- Strong understanding of trenching, pipe bedding, grades, slopes, backfilling, and compaction.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and layout information.
- Good mechanical knowledge and practical problem-solving skills.
- Valid Ontario driver’s licence and reliable transportation.
- Dependable, punctual, safety-conscious, and able to work effectively as part of a crew.
- Willingness to work overtime, occasional evenings or weekends, and travel when required.
- Experience operating dozers, loaders, backhoes, skid steers, and compactors is considered an asset.
- A valid DZ licence and current construction safety certifications are considered assets.
Due to the nature of our projects, successful applicants must be eligible to obtain project-specific security clearance, which may include a criminal background check.

Pay: $40.00-$45.00 per hour
