Controller (CPA Required)
The Aventus Group is seeking an experienced Controller (CPA Required) to lead the financial operations of our growing portfolio of companies. This is a senior leadership position for a highly motivated financial professional who can provide strategic financial guidance while ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of all accounting and financial reporting functions.
The successful candidate will work closely with ownership and management to support business growth, acquisitions, operational excellence, and long-term financial planning.
Key Responsibilities
● Lead and oversee the accounting and financial operations across multiple companies and business units.
● Prepare, review, and present weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
● Develop and manage cash flow forecasts, working capital, and liquidity planning.
● Prepare annual budgets, financial forecasts, and variance analysis.
● Monitor gross margins, profitability, and key financial performance indicators, providing recommendations to improve results.
● Establish, maintain, and strengthen internal controls, policies, and financial procedures.
● Oversee inventory controls, cycle counts, audit procedures, and shrinkage prevention.
● Identify theft, fraud, financial leakage, and operational inefficiencies while implementing corrective measures.
● Oversee payroll, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and proper internal controls.
● Review and ensure compliance with GST/PST filings and other statutory reporting requirements.
● Prepare financial reporting packages for banks, lenders, investors, and financing partners.
● Support corporate structuring, tax planning, and year-end financial statement preparation with external accountants.
● Supervise and mentor the bookkeeper, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
● Develop and implement financial systems, reporting processes, and best practices.
● Support ownership with strategic financial planning, business analysis, acquisitions, financing, and integration of newly acquired businesses.
● Assist with due diligence, business valuations, and financial analysis related to acquisitions and expansion opportunities.
Qualifications
● Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
● Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including senior leadership experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Finance Manager, or similar role.
● Demonstrated experience leading the full accounting cycle and financial operations for multiple entities.
● Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, and cash flow management.
● Experience with inventory-based businesses, retail, hospitality, liquor, franchise, manufacturing, or multi-entity organizations is considered a strong asset.
● Strong understanding of corporate taxation, GST/PST compliance, and year-end financial reporting.
● Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, and accounting/ERP software.
● Proven leadership, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
● Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
● Strong communication skills with the ability to present financial information to senior leadership and ownership.
