Position Overview
Instrumentation team members at THM play a key role in supporting industrial construction, maintenance, commissioning, troubleshooting, and project execution. These roles may involve instrument installation, calibration, testing, loop checks, terminations, instrument mechanic work, tubing installation, commissioning support, and field coordination depending on the position.
Successful candidates will be safety-focused, reliable, technically capable, and committed to high-quality workmanship. Whether supporting sustaining work in an active brownfield facility or contributing to capital projects in greenfield environments, THM instrumentation professionals are expected to take pride in their work and help deliver proven results.
Key Responsibilities
Instrument Foremen may be responsible for:
- Leading instrumentation crews in the safe and efficient execution of field work
- Coordinating daily work plans, manpower, tools, materials, permits, work fronts, and work sequencing
- Reading and interpreting drawings, specifications, loop drawings, P&IDs, instrument indexes, tubing drawings, work packages, and project documentation
- Supporting instrument installation, calibration, tubing, terminations, loop checks, testing, commissioning, and start-up activities
- Overseeing instrument mechanic work, including bending and installing tubing, fitting installation, instrument stands, supports, manifolds, impulse lines, air headers, and related field installations
- Ensuring tubing work, compression fittings, instrument connections, and associated installations are completed safely, correctly, and to project quality standards
- Working closely with Superintendents, Project Managers, client representatives, QA/QC, electrical teams, mechanical teams, and other trades
- Monitoring productivity, quality, safety, and schedule performance
- Identifying field issues and helping resolve them quickly and practically
- Providing hands-on leadership and working directly with crews when needed to get the job done
- Leading by example in the field through a practical, team-first approach
- Supporting sustaining and capital project work across both brownfield and greenfield environments
Journeymen Instrument Techs may be responsible for:
- Performing industrial instrumentation installation, maintenance, testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair work
- Completing instrument mechanic work, including bending, routing, installing, and securing stainless tubing and other instrument tubing systems
- Installing compression fittings, manifolds, instrument stands, brackets, supports, air headers, impulse lines, sensing lines, pneumatic tubing, and related instrumentation components
- Installing and maintaining transmitters, control valves, switches, analyzers, tubing, panels, junction boxes, instruments, and associated systems
- Reading and working from P&IDs, loop drawings, instrument indexes, tubing drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, specifications, and work packages
- Performing calibrations, loop checks, function testing, stroke testing, continuity checks, and commissioning support as required
- Supporting troubleshooting of instrumentation and control systems in industrial environments
- Working safely in active brownfield operating facilities and greenfield construction sites
- Assisting with inspections, deficiency repairs, punch lists, turnover documentation, and project closeout requirements
- Supporting Foremen and field leadership to complete work safely, efficiently, and to a high standard
- Mentoring apprentices and contributing to a strong team environment
- Delivering quality workmanship on sustaining and capital projects
Instrument Apprentices may be responsible for:
- Assisting Journeymen Instrument Techs and Instrument Foremen with installation, maintenance, testing, calibration, and project work
- Supporting instrument mechanic work, including tubing preparation, bending assistance, tubing installation, fitting installation, material handling, and general field support
- Assisting with the installation of instrument tubing, supports, instrument stands, manifolds, air headers, impulse lines, pneumatic tubing, and related components under supervision
- Supporting cable pulling, terminations, panel work, instrument installation, device checks, and general field tasks
- Learning to read drawings, P&IDs, loop sheets, tubing drawings, work packages, and project documentation
- Assisting with calibration preparation, loop checks, testing support, and commissioning activities under supervision
- Maintaining tools, materials, work areas, and housekeeping standards
- Following safe work practices, site procedures, and direction from Journeymen, Foremen, and Superintendents
- Building hands-on experience in industrial instrumentation, controls, and instrument mechanic work
- Developing skills across both sustaining work and capital project execution in brownfield and greenfield environments
Qualifications
- Previous industrial instrumentation or instrument mechanic experience is considered an asset
- Valid instrumentation trade certification, apprenticeship registration, or relevant technical training based on the role
- Experience bending and installing instrument tubing is considered an asset
- Experience with compression fittings, manifolds, impulse lines, air headers, instrument stands, supports, transmitters, analyzers, control valves, calibration, and loop checks is considered an asset
- Experience in construction, maintenance, commissioning, shutdowns, turnarounds, or project execution is considered an asset
- Ability to work safely in industrial environments, including active operating facilities
- Ability to support greenfield construction and capital project execution
- Strong understanding of safety, quality, productivity, and teamwork
- Ability to read drawings, P&IDs, loop drawings, tubing drawings, schematics, work packages, or technical documentation as required by the role
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Valid safety tickets, site access requirements, or additional certifications are considered assets
- Willingness to travel or work project-based schedules as required
- For Instrument Foreman roles, demonstrated ability to lead crews, coordinate work, and support hands-on execution in the field

For Instrument Apprentices, we are looking for dependable, safety-minded team members who want to build their careers, strengthen their technical and mechanical skills, and gain hands-on experience in industrial instrumentation.
