Guelph Youth Singers – Choir I Conductor
We are seeking a dynamic, community-oriented conductor for our 2026–2027 season. This position is a one-year contract, with a possibility to renew for future years.
GYS’s three choirs offer beginner to senior choral opportunities for youth aged 6 to 19. The Choir I Conductor will lead Choir I, our introductory choir. Choir I serves children ages 6–9 who are new to choral singing. The Choir I Conductor will work closely with the Artistic Director and the GYS artistic team in a collaborative and supportive environment to create inspiring rehearsals and meaningful performance opportunities for young singers.
Rehearsals take place on Tuesday evenings from 6:00pm to 7:00pm at the Guelph Youth Music Centre. Choristers will be involved in two full concerts (December and May) as well as the Kiwanis Music Festival of Guelph, and other community concerts and outreach opportunities.
The successful candidate will begin on September 1, with orientation, planning, and meetings during the first two weeks of September. Weekly rehearsals begin Tuesday, September 15. Key responsibilities of the Choir I Conductor include:
- Plan and lead engaging weekly rehearsals for Choir I throughout the season, including preparation and lesson planning (33 weeks).
- Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and positive rehearsal environment while supporting the musical and personal growth of each chorister.
- Collaborate with the Artistic Director on repertoire selection, concert planning, festivals, outreach opportunities, and chorister development.
- Develop singers' vocal technique, musicianship, and sight-singing skills using the GYS curriculum.
- Communicate with families regarding rehearsals, performances, and choir activities, contributing to regular GYS communications as needed.
- Work with staff and volunteers to ensure the safety and well-being of choristers during rehearsals, including drop-off and dismissal procedures.
- Assess choristers' musical development and provide recommendations regarding advancement within the GYS program.
- Support GYS recruitment and community engagement through outreach events and performances, as opportunities arise.
- Participate in weekly artistic staff meetings and collaborate as part of the GYS artistic team.
- Contribute to other artistic initiatives and responsibilities as required, in collaboration with the Artistic Director.
Qualifications

- Undergraduate degree in music, music education, choral conducting, voice, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Demonstrated experience leading and inspiring young singers, particularly children approximately 6–10 years of age.
- Experience conducting choirs, vocal ensembles, or other music ensembles.
- Strong understanding of healthy vocal technique and age-appropriate vocal development.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively as part of the GYS artistic team.
- Experience in youth arts education and/or the non-profit arts sector is considered an asset.
Additional Requirements
The successful candidate will be required to provide:
- A current Vulnerable Sector Check
- Current First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to the start of the contract)
Compensation
$3,500–$5,000 for the season, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
