Job Posting: Fire Inspector
The Municipality of the County of Pictou is currently seeking a knowledgeable and motivated Fire Inspector to join our Department of Emergency Management & Public Safety. This position plays a critical role in ensuring fire and life safety compliance, supporting public safety initiatives, and contributing to emergency management efforts across the Municipality.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Director of Emergency Management & Public Safety, the Fire Inspector is responsible for implementing and conducting fire inspections throughout the Municipality in accordance with the Nova Scotia Fire Safety Act, associated regulations, applicable codes, and by-laws.
The successful candidate will work closely with internal departments, external regulatory agencies, and the public to promote and enforce fire safety standards. This role also supports broader emergency management and public safety operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct mandatory, routine, and complaint-driven fire and life safety inspections across the municipal service area.
- Enforce compliance with the Nova Scotia Fire Safety Act, National Fire Code of Canada, and applicable municipal by-laws and policies.
- Identify deficiencies and communicate required corrective actions through formal correspondence and orders.
- Perform follow-up inspections to ensure compliance and resolution of deficiencies.
- Determine and post occupancy loads for public buildings in accordance with provincial regulations.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date inspection records, reports, and documentation.
- Prepare reports for municipal council, provincial agencies, and other stakeholders as required.
- Provide professional guidance and education to property owners, developers, contractors, and the public on fire safety requirements.
- Collaborate with municipal staff, provincial fire officials, and other regulatory bodies.
- Support the Office of the Fire Marshal and other agencies as required.
- Participate in training, professional development, and certification maintenance activities.
- Assist with emergency response or planning activities, including support during Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) activations when required.
- Perform other related fire safety duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- High School Diploma; post-secondary education in fire protection, inspection, or a related field is considered an asset.
- Minimum Level I Fire Inspector certification (FIANS), with willingness to obtain Level II and/or NFPA 1031 certification.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply fire safety legislation, codes, and standards.
- Valid driver’s license.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong understanding of fire inspection practices, codes, and regulatory frameworks.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and record-keeping accuracy.
- Proficiency with standard office software and inspection/reporting systems.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Assets:
- Advanced fire inspection certification (Level II or NFPA 1031).
- Experience working in a municipal or regulatory environment.
- Familiarity with emergency management systems, including Incident Command System (ICS).
Compensation:
This position is unionized under the NSGEU Collective Agreement. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications in accordance with the agreement.
Salary: $71,565.38 – $80,896.26
