Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.
Position Overview:
In this project the research assistant will be using and programming a commercial open-source system called 'FarmBot'. This device can automate the management of plants (watering, imaging, evaluating soil moistures etc.). The research assistant will write an interface that makes it easy for technicians to use FarmBot and create a data pipeline from FarmBot towards our research group's data server.
Duties:
- Writing of scientific reports.
- Presentation of results to peers and project holders.
Qualifications:
- Academic Major in Applied Computer Science.
- Completion of ACS-2102 Scientific Computing, ACS-3902 Database Systems, ACS-3911 Computer Networks, ACS-3953 Introduction to AI.
- Strong programming skills.
- Experience with Unix, SSH, SFTP.
- This project requires to work in a environmentally controlled walk-in growth chamber.
- Lifting light weights and usage of simple tools to manipulate hardware (using screwdrivers, etc.).
Condition(s) of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from August 4, 2026 - December 4, 2026 and the estimated total hours of work will be 0-150 hours.
