Job Overview
GLAE is one of Toronto’s leading and most innovative construction and development companies. Our Design Centre is seeking an experienced, on-site Interior Designer who understands the synergy between architectural structure and interior space. This role goes far beyond aesthetics; you will be responsible for space planning, technical drafting, building code compliance, and on-site construction coordination to bring high-quality residential/commercial developments to life.
Responsibilities
- Technical Space Planning & Drafting: Translate client goals into functional spatial layouts. Utilize AutoCAD and Revit to produce comprehensive Construction Information (CD) packages, including partition plans, reflected ceiling plans (RCP), electrical/lighting layouts, and detailed millwork drawings.
- OBC & Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all interior design concepts, material selections, and spatial configurations strictly adhere to the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and local municipal bylaws.
- Cross-Functional Technical Collaboration: Act as the key liaison between the Design Centre and external/internal partners, including Architects, Structural/Mechanical Engineers, Project Managers, and site trades, to resolve structural and layout conflicts.
- Material Specification & Procurement: Guide clients through technical material selections (tile layouts, flooring specifications, plumbing fixtures, and finishes). Manage accurate cost estimation, quantity take-offs, and procurement budgets.
- Contract Administration & Site Oversight: Conduct regular site visits to supervise the execution of design plans. Verify that formatting, framing, plumbing rough-ins, and finishes match blueprints and design specifications; proactively resolve site deficiencies.
- Project Handover: Lead final client walkthroughs, document deficiencies, and coordinate with the construction team for prompt remediation prior to occupancy.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design (or equivalent architectural background).
- Experience: 3+ years of related interior design experience (residential/commercial development or construction industry).
- Advanced Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit (Must be capable of independent technical detailing and drafting).
- Strong working knowledge of 3D modeling/rendering tools (SketchUp, Enscape, Lumion, and Photoshop).
- Building Code Knowledge: Solid, practical understanding of the Ontario Building Code (OBC), zoning bylaws, and permit application processes.
- Professional Credentials: Active ARIDO membership (or immediate eligibility to register) is highly preferred.
- Core Competencies: Exceptional spatial orientation, strong structural intuition, rigorous attention to technical detail, and clear professional communication for managing site trades and clients.
