The opportunity
AIRmarket is seeking a Technology Team Lead to serve as the engineering backbone of Canada's most advanced RPAS Traffic Management company. This is a hands-on working manager role — you will write code and architect systems while leading a hybrid development team, reporting directly to the CEO and holding full accountability for software delivery across the organization. The CEO sets the strategic vision; your role is to translate that vision into clear technical direction, rally your team around it, and drive it through to delivery — bridging the gap between where AIRmarket is going and what gets built.
You are a builder who understands regulated infrastructure, a leader who still commits to the repo, and someone who understands how AI-assisted development and agentic workflows can materially improve quality and operational efficiency. If you are energized by the intersection of cloud infrastructure, IoT edge devices, airspace safety, and frontier AI tooling — this role is built for you.
Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent
Location: Edmonton, Alberta (In Office)
Compensation: Salary based on experience. Salary range: $100,000+ CAD.
What you will do
- Act as the primary technical liaison between the CEO and the development team, communicating progress, risks, and resource needs with clarity and accountability
- Operate as a coding working manager: actively contributing to front-end and full-stack development on AIRmarket's FLYsafe product suite and airspace management platform
- Lead, mentor, and manage a hybrid team of developers — setting technical direction, conducting code reviews, and building a high-performance development culture
- Design and deliver a fully automated CI/CD development lifecycle
- Define and enforce software development best practices, coding standards, security protocols, and documentation requirements across the development team
- Architect and maintain enterprise-grade cloud and edge infrastructure using Kubernetes, containerized microservices, and IoT device integration for drone C2 and airspace surveillance networks
- Evaluate, prototype, and implement AI and AI agent workflows to automate enterprise processes and accelerate development velocity — this is a strategic priority for the organization
- Translate regulatory requirements, product roadmap objectives, and partner integration needs into sprint-ready development tasks with clear delivery commitments to leadership
- Support the leadership team with their ongoing collaboration with Transport Canada, NAV Canada, and iART Alliance partners on technical interoperability and integration requirements for the national RTM Trials
What you bring
Technical skills
- Front-end and full-stack development (React, TypeScript, REST APIs)
- Kubernetes, container orchestration, cloud platforms (AWS)
- IoT device connectivity and edge computing architecture
- Enterprise security design and compliance (SOC 2, ISO 27001)
- CI/CD pipeline design and automation (GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, or equivalent)
- Working knowledge of UTM / U-Space / rFIMS standards
- Hands-on AI/ML integration and LLM/agent workflow implementation in enterprise environments
Experience & domain
- Significant progressive experience in software engineering and technical leadership roles (8+ years)
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
- Proven track record in leading and managing hybrid or distributed teams
- Experience in regulated industries: aviation, aerospace, critical infrastructure, government, or defence
- Familiarity with RPAS operations, drone management systems, or airspace management
- Strong communicator — comfortable presenting to executive and regulatory audiences
- Accountable delivery mindset: scope, timeline, quality, and compliance as one
Assets that will set you apart
- Track record building or deploying AI agent systems that deliver measurable outcomes in enterprise settings
- Hands-on experience navigating an industry certification process (SOC, CPCSC, ISO) end-to-end
- Experience with real-time data streaming and messaging architectures, including MQTT for IoT device communication, Kafka for event streaming, and stream processing frameworks such as Apache Flink
- Direct experience with Transport Canada RPAS regulations or NAV Canada systems
- Understanding of Command and Control (C2) network architecture for drone operations, including how cellular and radio network IP communications are practically operationalized in RPAS deployments
- Prior experience at an RTM/UTM platform provider, a UAS service supplier (USS), or an aviation technology company
- Experience delivering software for BVLOS-capable or safety-critical operations
- Deep expertise in emerging aviation and industry standards relevant to RTM/UTM, including ASTM (F3411 Network Remote ID, F3548 UTM), EUROCAE, ISO, and RTCA (DO-282).
- Drone/UAV engineering, design, and manufacturing experience, including hardware/software interface design, with a track record of achieving regulatory recognition.
What we offer
- An opportunity to create a difference — reporting to the CEO with real influence over technical strategy and company direction
- The opportunity to build the technology stack underpinning Canada's national drone traffic management infrastructure from the ground up
- Meaningful work: the platform you build will govern real airspace used by emergency responders, energy operators, and commercial drone operators nationwide
About AIRmarket
AIRmarket is shaping the future of drone operations in Canada. As Founder and Executive Director of the Alberta RTM Trials (iART Alliance), we are driving RPAS Traffic Management innovation with Transport Canada and NAV Canada through the national RTM Trials. Our deployed network of infrastructure delivers airspace surveillance, Command and Control (C2) network, and drone-in-a-box deployments. Our RTM system is purpose-built to align with NAV Canada's upcoming rFIMS service, ensuring seamless integration into Canada's future airspace. Powered by our FLYsafe products, we combine advanced hardware and software solutions to enable BVLOS operations that meet Transport Canada regulations — setting the new standard for safe, scalable, and reliable drone operations nationwide.
The Technology Team Lead will be central to delivering on this mission: owning the architecture and delivery pipeline that powers the FLYsafe platform, accelerating our AI-enabled development capabilities, and ensuring our platform meets the compliance and interoperability standards required to operate within — and help define — Canada's national airspace management ecosystem. This is a founding technical leadership role with direct impact on how we scale commercially and operationally as we advance toward national deployment.
This role is ideal for someone excited by the opportunity to contribute to a growing company in an innovative, emerging industry with significant long-term potential.
