Job Posting: Staff Representative
The Society of Professional Engineers and Associates (SPEA-UNIFOR Local 7474) is seeking an experienced Labour Relations professional to join our team as a Staff Representative.
SPEA is a membership-driven, open, and democratic trade union representing engineers, technicians, technologists, trades, administrative staff, and other professionals across four bargaining units at Candu Energy Inc. We are seeking a dedicated professional who shares our core union values.
Role Overview
Working alongside two existing staff members, the successful candidate will collaborate closely with the SPEA Executive Board and UNIFOR staff. You will provide strategic advice, guidance, and representation to Executive representatives and members on all labour relations matters.
Key Responsibilities
· Membership Representation: Investigate, prepare, and present grievances; provide expert advice on collective agreement entitlements; and handle arbitrations (dependent on qualifications).
· Legal & Policy Guidance: Research, analyze, and interpret collective agreements, the Canada Labour Code, the Human Rights Code, and workplace policies.
· Collective Bargaining: Provide comprehensive support for contract negotiations, strategic campaigns, and dispute resolution.
· Executive Support: Draft membership communications, review internal policies, and support strategic Executive initiatives.
Qualifications & Skills
· Education: Bachelor’s degree; a degree in law or labour relations is a strong asset.
· Experience: 5+ years of related experience in collective bargaining, grievance handling, and arbitration preparation.
· Knowledge: Demonstrated commitment to union principles and strong familiarity with the Canada Labour Code.
· Communication: Exceptional advocacy and representation skills, with the ability to write clear correspondence, proposals, and membership updates.
· Interpersonal Skills: Strong leadership and listening skills, with the ability to persuade, motivate, and handle workplace challenges with sensitivity.
· Operations: Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and capable of prioritizing conflicting tasks independently under tight timelines.
Compensation & Work Environment
· Salary: range $130,000 to $155,000 depending on experience, based on a 28-hour work week.
· Schedule: A flexible full-time work week ranging from 3 to 5 days per week. The SPEA office operates on a four-day week (closed on Fridays).
· Location: Hybrid work structure, with a general expectation to work from the office a minimum of two days per week.
