About the Role Pioneer Professional Accountants Inc. is seeking a Senior Tax Accountant with hands-on public practice experience in Canadian tax.
This role is focused on T1, T2, and GST compliance, along with the preparation of supporting financial information required for tax filings. It is designed for professionals who want to build depth in tax work and client advisory, without involvement in audit or assurance engagements.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance
- Prepare and review T1 and T2 tax returns.
- Ensure filings are accurate and aligned with Canadian tax legislation.
- Maintain clear, defensible working papers.
Financial Statement Preparation (Non-Assurance)
- Prepare year-end financial statements to support corporate tax filings.
- Review and organize client financial data for accuracy and completeness.
- Guide junior staff in preparing financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Ensure consistency and quality in internally prepared financial reporting.
GST/HST Compliance
- Prepare and review GST/HST returns.
- Perform ITC analysis and reconciliations.
- Assist with GST/HST treatment of complex transactions.
Client Work
- Communicate directly with clients to gather information and resolve tax matters.
- Provide clear, practical, and professional responses to routine tax questions.
CRA Matters
- Assist with CRA reviews, audits, and correspondence.
- Prepare supporting documentation and schedules.
- Support formal Notice of Objection filings where required.
Team Support
- Review compliance work prepared by junior staff.
- Provide guidance on tax filings and financial statement preparation.
- Maintain consistency and technical accuracy across all firm files.
Workflow Management
- Manage multiple deadlines effectively during busy tax seasons.
- Deliver accurate, defensible work within strict statutory timelines.
Requirements
- Education: Diploma or degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of public practice experience in Canada. Strong experience with T1 and T2 preparation is required.
- Technical Skills: Solid understanding of Canadian tax compliance, experience preparing financial statements for small to mid-sized businesses, and familiarity with GST/HST filings and reconciliations.
- Software: Experience with Taxprep, QuickBooks Online, and CaseWare preferred. Strong advanced Excel skills are required.
- Core Attributes: Strong attention to detail, the ability to manage files independently, highly organized with strong deadline management, and professional communication skills for team collaboration.
