Youth Wellness Worker

The Wakenagun Youth Healing Lodge located in Timmins, ON is designed to bridge wellness through culture specifically spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical well-being. By connecting with traditional culture, the intent is to bring to light meaning, purpose, hope, and belonging.
SUMMARY:
As a member of the Wakenagun Youth Healing Lodge, the Youth Wellness Worker is responsible for providing comprehensive services to youth between the ages of 12 and 17 in attendance at the Healing Lodge. The Casual Youth Wellness Worker position is responsible for providing support and supervision during programming, recreational, and cultural activities. Along side the facilitation of programming, the Casual Youth Wellness Worker position is also responsible for providing support and overall supervision to the youth. This includes but is not limited to, recreational and cultural activities / outings, and throughout the day-to-day routine. The Casual Youth Wellness Worker develops and implements individualized treatment plans to address the unique needs of each youth. The role focuses on managing behaviour and supporting youth in making positive choices through guidance and role modelling.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
- Incorporate Indigenous culture in all aspects of healing and treatment activities
- Actively assist youth in identifying individualized wellness plans and goals and work towards completing their individualized objectives and goals
- Ensure that youth are engaged and connected to programming and supports offered
- Make sure daily resident schedules and routines are followed by residents
- Provide assessments, individual counselling, and treatment plans for the youth
- Complete screening and risk assessment for suicide and mental status
- Provide youth crisis intervention counselling as required
- Guide youth with conflict resolution skills and problem-solving strategies
- Collaborate on the planning and implementation of a variety of community activities/events to promote the personal wellness of youth
- Prepare clear, concise, and accurate daily logs and complete all required documentation, including medication management, serious occurrence reports, incident reports, plans of care, and case files.
- Draft written documents that are clear, concise, and easy to understand.
- Use appropriate clinical, diagnostic, and treatment-planning terminology when working with clients.
- Collaborate effectively in a case management setting with service providers, families, and community partners to develop treatment and discharge plans.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding residents at all times.
- Perform additional duties related to the role as assigned.
ACCOUNTABLITY:
- The Youth Wellness Worker is under the day-to-day Supervision of the Treatment Services Manager with further accountability to the overall performance to the Director of Treatment Services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor Degree in Social Services with 3 years of relevant counselling experience in a scope of practice or experience in addictions and mental health; or
- Diploma in Social Work with 5 years relevant counselling experience in a scope of practice or experience in addictions and mental health.
- Must possess a valid G Driver’s License
- Must provide a clear criminal reference check (PVSC), which includes screening for vulnerable sector.
- Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, unless unable as per a protected ground in the Human Rights Code.
- Flexible schedule, as the residential facility runs 24 hours and staff will be required to work morning, evening, and night shifts
Knowledge & Experience
- 5 years of practical experience in the counselling field
- Experience in working with aboriginal people, families, and communities
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrate excellent organizational skills
- Working knowledge of therapeutic treatment options
- Knowledge of how mental health issues contribute to and affect the life of Indigenous people
- Knowledge of child, adolescent developmental, psychological, social and cognitive development
- Ability to speak a NAN language is an asset
