Job Overview
CCA is seeking an experienced Applications Engineer to support our growing automation, controls, and electrical services business across Canada and the U.S. This role is responsible for developing accurate, competitive estimates for electrical, instrumentation, automation, and controls projects. The ideal candidate brings strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate across sales, engineering, and project delivery teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for electrical, automation, controls, and instrumentation scopes of work
- Interpret RFQs, tender documents, control narratives, P&IDs, electrical drawings, and specifications
- Perform quantity take-offs for materials, labour, programming, and subcontracted services
- Develop competitive bid proposals including material, labour, engineering, programming, and commissioning costs
- Participate in bid reviews and project handoff meetings with Sales, Engineering, Project Management, and Purchasing teams
- Assess project risk, scope gaps, assumptions, and exclusions and communicate findings to management
- Maintain bid tracking logs, estimate files, and historical cost data
- Identify value engineering and cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or safety
- Coordinate with suppliers, vendors, and subcontractors to obtain pricing and technical input
- Collaborate with internal engineering and controls teams to ensure accurate system architecture and scope definition
- Support sales efforts by developing relationships with customers and identifying new automation and service opportunities
Qualifications:
- Minimum 7+ years of estimating experience in electrical, controls, automation, or industrial systems
- Strong understanding of industrial electrical systems, PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, instrumentation, and control panels
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, control schematics, P&IDs, and technical specifications
- Working knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and U.S. NEC, with regional code awareness considered an asset
- Experience estimating industrial, manufacturing, energy, water/wastewater, or process automation projects
- Proficiency with estimating software (e.g., Accubid or similar) and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams
- Highly organized, self-motivated, and capable of managing multiple bids and deadlines
- Experience with power distribution, automation retrofits, service work, and system upgrades is an asset
