Job Description
The Department of Surgery at Women’s College Hospital provides a variety of services to patients with many different conditions. We focus on innovation and ambulatory surgery and are able to treat many patients on a day-surgery basis.
Summary of duties, but not limited to:
- Provide perioperative care to patients.
- Participate as a surgical team member as a perioperative registered practical nurse primarily in the scrub role.
- Maintains knowledge and awareness of the patient condition during surgery.
- Maintain patient safety through strict adherence to policies, procedures and ORNAC standards of care.
- Active participation in learning and teaching opportunities to continuously improve surgical patient care and career development of self and others.
- May be required to work in various areas of the surgical program.
- Expected to rotate through all services
- Must wear lead
As a role model and champion you will work to identify and integrate safe, best practices into daily activities to foster the delivery of safe and exemplary care.

Qualifications
- Registered Practical Nurse Diploma is required
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario required.
- Post RPN Perioperative Certification required.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required, current Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is an asset
- Must have a minimum of 3 years current surgical experience in Surgical Day Care or other ambulatory setting
- Successful completion of the Physical Assessment Course for RPN with current competency
- Successful completion of Administration of Medications course and proven competence in according to the standards of practice from the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Proven ability to support comprehensive patient education throughout the perioperative continuum of care
- Excellent computer skills
- Must have excellent organizational, assessment, communication and teaching skills
- Work effectively as a strong team player
- Demonstrated record of good performance and acceptable attendance will be considered as part of the selection criteria.
- Professional behaviour and communication that meets the standards of the professional regulatory college or association, as applicable, and the standards of Women’s College Hospital.
