About the Role
The Designated Supervisor plays the role of supporting campers and staff at the NIC Youth Academy (YAC). This position blends direct camper supervision with behaviour support, making it a great fit for someone who thrives in a busy, kid-focused environment and knows how to roll with the unexpected.
During morning sign-in, lunch break and end-of-day parent pick up, the Designated Supervisor will take the lead on supervision so that camp leaders can complete their admin and breaks. Throughout the program day, you will also support campers who need extra help with learning tasks, behaviour, or communication.
This role takes place both indoors and outdoors on campus. The pace is fast and the days are varied.
What You Will Be Doing: Supervision and Safety
- Set up the morning check-in area and afternoon sign-out with outdoor activity supplies
- Set up the lunch and play area and boundary markers
- Supervise campers during check-in, sign-out, lunch, and transition times to ensure everyone is safe and accounted for.
- Initiate and participate in group games outside during their lunch break
- Know the camp rules and apply them consistently and fairly.
- Step in early to help campers work things out before they escalate.
- Respond calmly and appropriately to medical situations or incidents and follow the camp’s emergency procedures.
- Keep the lunch and activity areas tidy and free of hazards.
Student Support
- Attend one-on-one or with small groups of campers who need extra support with learning tasks, behaviour, or daily routines.
- Support campers with communication, including modelling language on communication systems at the student’s level.
- Collect observation data and share relevant information with the camp leaders and CE Program Officer
- Create a welcoming, inclusive vibe during lunch and free time where every kid feels like they belong.
- Encourage campers to eat their meals and drink water, especially on hot days.
- Model positive social behaviour and help campers practice respectful interaction during free play.
Team Collaboration
- Follow the direction of the camp leader and assistant.
- Communicate clearly and promptly with the YAC team about anything that comes up during your shift.
- Pitch in with other tasks as needed.
What We Are Looking For:
Required:
- 19 years of age or older
- Grade 12 diploma plus some post-secondary education in a Human Services field or related discipline
- Current Standard or Emergency First Aid with CPR-C (before your first day)
- Clear Criminal Record Check including a Vulnerable Sector check (this is the applicant’s responsibility and expense)
- Experience working with children or youth in a camp, school, or other structured setting (practicums count!)
Preferred:
- Solid communication and people skills
- Ability to manage and engage groups of up to 40 campers aged 7-13 with other staff (Camper to staff ratio is less than 10:1)
- Reliable and punctual
- Patient, enthusiastic, and genuinely good with kids
