Company Overview
Carbon Capture and Reclaiming Services Ltd (CCRS) is an innovative start-up with multi-site operations across Canada and the United States. We are a fast-paced, innovation-driven company specializing in chemical purification and engineering services across North America. With a commitment to operational excellence and sustainable growth, we are seeking a highly capable Senior Accountant to strengthen our finance team and support strategic initiatives. This role is ideal for a hands-on accounting professional who is eager to take ownership of financial processes that directly impact business performance.
Position Summary
The Senior Accountant is a hands-on, remote role responsible for full-cycle accounting and month-end close for CCRS's Canadian and U.S. operations. Reporting to the CFO, this individual will own day-to-day accounting execution, lead the year-end audit preparation, and help define and monitor the KPIs and critical success factors that measure the health of the accounting function. This role suits someone with a minimum of three years of full-cycle accounting experience who is comfortable working independently in a remote, multi-entity environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Own full-cycle accounting for Canadian and U.S. entities, including journal entries, general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, accruals, and month-end/year-end close activities.
- Prepare and distribute accurate, timely management reporting packs, KPI dashboards, and variance analysis linking financial results to operational drivers.
- Oversee accounts payable, including coding, payment runs, vendor management, and maintenance of strong internal controls.
- Responsible for the end-to-end payroll process for Canadian and/or U.S. employees, including new hire onboarding, payroll setup, issuing Records of Employment (ROEs), and preparation and distribution of T4s/year-end payroll slips.
- Assist with year-end audit preparation, including compiling audit schedules and supporting documentation, responding to auditor requests, and liaising directly with external auditors and tax advisors.
- Define, track, and report on KPIs and critical success factors for the accounting function (e.g., close-cycle time, reconciliation accuracy, remittance timeliness), and recommend improvements where targets are missed.
- Ensure all government remittances - sales tax, payroll remittances, and other statutory filings - are completed accurately and on time.
- Maintain compliance with ASPE/GAAP (Canada), U.S. GAAP, and CCRS internal accounting policies.
- Support budgeting and forecasting cycles with data, insights, and cost modelling.
- Assist with treasury activities, including cash flow monitoring and liquidity forecasting.
- Support automation, ERP/BI reporting improvements, and data quality initiatives.
- Document and implement financial and business process best practices, including internal controls and workflow design.
- Collaborate remotely with department heads and cross-functional teams to align financial data with operational goals.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field or related certificate.
- Minimum 3 years of progressive, full-cycle accounting experience, ideally in a multi-entity or cross-border (Canada/U.S.) environment.
- Hands-on experience assisting with year-end audits, including preparation of audit working papers and schedules.
- Experience running payroll end-to-end, including new hire onboarding, issuing ROEs, and preparing T4s (Canadian payroll compliance experience required; U.S. payroll experience an asset).
- Strong working knowledge of ASPE/GAAP, U.S. GAAP, and general financial reporting standards.
- Advanced proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, macros).
- Proven ability to work independently and manage competing priorities in a remote work environment.
Key Skills & Competencies
- Hands-on and detail-oriented: comfortable owning transactional accounting end-to-end, not just reviewing it.
- Self-directed in a remote setting: strong time management and reliable, proactive communication with a distributed team.
- Analytical mindset: able to translate financial data into clear, actionable KPIs and insights for leadership.
- Audit-ready: organized record-keeping and documentation habits that support a smooth year-end audit process.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with finance and non-finance stakeholders.
- Adaptable and resourceful in a fast-paced, growing, multi-site organization.
