Intro: Physics of the Atmosphere ATOC 214 - Fall 2026 (3 Credits)
Course Description:
An introduction to key physical processes operating in the atmosphere, designed for students in science and engineering. Topics typically include: composition of the atmosphere; vertical structure; heat transfer; solar and terrestrial radiation and Earth's energy balance; seasonal and daily temperature changes; humidity and the formation of clouds and precipitation; stability of tropospheric air layers; applications of adiabatic charts.
Job Description:

Prepare formal lectures and lead class discussions on the topics of composition of the atmosphere; heat transfer; the upper atmosphere; atmospheric optics; formation of clouds and precipitation; instability; adiabatic charts.

Administering tests and examinations in conformity with McGill regulations.

Mark assignments and tests and submit final grades online using McGill systems.
Class lectures are 3 hours per week for 13 weeks per term (31-Aug-2026 to 04-Dec-2026)
The number of TAs is linked to the enrollment, which is forecast to be 55 students.
Teaching Qualification Requirements:
Must have a PhD in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, or a related field.
Must have prior experience teaching similar courses at McGill, or relevant teaching at a university or college level.
