We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Electrical Controls Designer / Automation Programmer with a strong electrical engineering background and proven experience delivering complex automation systems.
This is a high-impact, senior role where you will lead projects from concept → electrical design → programming → commissioning, within a fast-paced automation environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the design and development of electrical control systems using AutoCAD Electrical
- Own full lifecycle delivery of automation projects, from concept through commissioning
- Develop advanced PLC and HMI programs (Beckhoff, Siemens, Allen-Bradley)
- Architect system designs, including PLC networks, safety systems, motion control, and industrial communication protocols
- Create and review schematics, panel layouts, and BOMs to ensure accuracy and manufacturability
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior designers and programmers
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex system-level issues during build, testing, and site commissioning
- Interface directly with clients, vendors, and internal stakeholders to define requirements and deliver solutions
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and best practices
- Drive continuous improvement in design standards, programming practices, and project execution
Required Qualifications & Experience:
- Electrical Engineering degree or diploma (P.Eng. or CET designation is an asset)
- 7–10+ years of experience in industrial automation and controls
- 5+ years of hands-on PLC/HMI programming in a production environment
- 5+ years of electrical design experience using AutoCAD Electrical
- Proven experience delivering end-to-end automation projects independently
- Strong proficiency in Mastercam (required)
- Hands-on experience with 5-axis CNC programming (required)
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks or similar CAD software (required)
- Strong understanding of: GD&T and blueprint reading , Tooling selection, feeds & speeds, Machining of complex geometries
- Experience with Heidenhain and/or Fanuc controllers
- Practical knowledge of CNC machining (mills and lathes, including setup)
- Ability to bridge design intent and manufacturing execution
- Strong problem-solving skills across design and machining
- Ability to manage multiple custom projects in a fast-paced, high-mix manufacturing environment
- Flexibility to support overtime when required
Strong expertise in:
- PLC platforms (Beckhoff, Siemens, Allen-Bradley)
- Motion control, servo systems, and VFD integration
- Industrial networks (EtherCAT, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, etc.)
- Electrical panel design, safety circuits, and system integration
- Reading, reviewing, and approving complex electrical schematics
Nice-to-Have
- Experience working within a formal quality system
- Exposure to lean manufacturing principles
- Background in regulated manufacturing (aerospace, medical, defense)
