Intermediate Structural Engineer
Company Overview
We are a private, employee-owned engineering firm. We have specialized in Electrical Engineering design, testing and commissioning for Industrial and Power Utility clients for over 40 years. We have completed projects for clients throughout Atlantic Canada from offices located in Dartmouth and Sydney, Nova Scotia, and Saint John, New Brunswick.
As a large portion of our work is related to substation design, we are developing our structural capabilities to design the associated structure supports, foundations and buildings for our power projects. This role can be based out of any of our three offices.
Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled and collaborative Intermediate Structural Engineer to join our engineering team. In this role, you will contribute to the design, analysis, documentation and coordination of safe, efficient and code-compliant structures. You will work closely with architects, project managers and other stakeholders to support projects from early design through construction.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering Design: Design and assess steel structures, concrete foundations, equipment supports, pipe racks, buildings and industrial infrastructure.
- Project Management: Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables for assigned structural scopes. Act as the primary technical contact for clients and contractors.
- Project Coordination: Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and geotechnical disciplines, as well as clients.
- Quality Assurance: Prepare and review drawings, specifications, and cost estimates to ensure accuracy, quality, and complete compliance with the National Building Code of Canada, local building codes, ASCE 113, the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual, as well as CSA S16 for steel and CSA A23.3 for concrete
- Mentorship: Mentor junior engineers and drafting staff to promote best practices in design and drafting techniques.
- Field Engineering: Conduct site visits to assess existing structures and provide design clarification and technical guidance during construction phases.
- Prepare Job Proposals: Prepare financial cost estimates and prepare proposal documents for new projects.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (B.Eng) from an accredited university.
- Experience: 5 to 10 years of progressive experience in civil/structural engineering design and project coordination, as a Professional Engineer.
- Licensure: Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing, or eligible for immediate registration with the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia (APENS), Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick (APEGNB), Engineers PEI, or Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL)
- Software Mastery: Proficiency with structural analysis tools and design software. Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, Mathcad, Civil 3D, Bluebeam and Microsoft Office is an asset.
- Code Knowledge: Familiarity with Atlantic Canada’s provincial building codes, regulations and construction standards is an asset.
- Communication: Proven ability to prepare complex technical reports, present designs to clients, and coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Valid driver's license and vehicle for regular site travel.

- Ability to independently manage personal work schedule to handle multiple projects at once while maintaining deadlines.
