Job Description
Gordon Neighbourhood House is seeking a someone who is equally passionate about food and community. The ideal candidate is someone who thrives being in fast-paced community setting, has excellent time management and communication skills, and enjoys working with older adults and seniors. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing menus, preparing healthy, nutritious meals, supporting kitchen volunteers, and overall, help creative an inclusive and accessible program for vulnerable community members. This position reports to the Manager of Seniors Programs.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare menus and cook healthy meals for older adults and seniors participating in our United Way-funded Therapeutic Activation Programs for Seniors
- Oversee kitchen volunteers, providing guidance, mentorship, and support as needed
- Ensure all food is prepared following FoodSafe best practices, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen
- Monitor food inventory and create a grocery list for the Manager of Seniors Programs
- Set up and clean up kitchen and dining areas before and after meals
- Maintain punctuality and professionalism while working in a fast-paced environment
- Create and follow established recipes or suggest creative, nutritious meal ideas that align with the needs of our programs
Skills and Qualifications
- Valid Food Safe Level 1 Certificate
- Must successfully complete a criminal record check prior to employment
- Experience cooking for 20-25 individuals in one setting
- Understanding and commitment to creating inclusive and accessible community spaces
- Strong planning, organizational and time management skills
- Excellent and proficient oral and written communication
- Passion and commitment for ongoing professional development and growth
- Creativity, critical thinking, and adaptability are key skills to success
- Ability to supervise and lead a team of volunteers
- A passion for preparing healthy meals and contributing to the well-being of the community
- A driver’s license and access to a vehicle or car-share network is considered an asset
Employment Terms
- Starting hourly rate of $25.98/hour, Step 2 of P3 band.

- This position works 21 hours/week, which translates to 3 days/week at Gordon Neighbourhood House and is fully in-person. Some weekends and evenings may be required.
