Senior Financial Accountant

This position is based in Toronto and will further support the increasing demands within our growing Accounting Department. Reporting directly to the Controller, the successful candidate will be responsible for financial and accounting activities including, but not limited to, the following:
Key Responsibilities
Financial Accounting & Reporting

Prepare monthly financial reporting files, including working papers, account analyses, and supporting schedules.

Prepare recurring and month-end journal entries.

Perform reconciliations for various balance sheet and income statement accounts and investigate reconciling items.

Prepare reconciliations between the general ledger and source systems to ensure data accuracy and completeness.

Prepare multi-entity financial reports, consolidations, and supporting financial statement schedules.

Provide variance analysis and assist with the investigation of significant financial variances.

Ensure compliance with ASPE and company accounting policies and procedures.

Review purchasing transactions and employee expense reports for compliance with company policies.

Create EKA invoices, debit notes, and credit notes as required.

Assist in coordinating and executing the monthly and year-end close processes.

Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard financial information and ensure reporting integrity.

Monitor the accuracy of accounting records and recommend improvements to strengthen financial controls.

Review and approve Accounts Payable invoice batches and support Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable activities as required.

Support continuous improvement of accounting policies, procedures, and reporting processes.

Coordinate annual external audit requirements by preparing schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.

Liaise with external auditors and respond to audit requests in a timely manner.

Assist with the preparation of documentation required for regulatory and statutory reporting.
Process Improvement & Systems

Identify opportunities to automate and improve accounting and month-end processes to increase efficiency, strengthen controls, and reduce risk.

Participate in the implementation, enhancement, and ongoing optimization of accounting systems, reports, and financial processes.

Leverage existing and emerging technologies to improve reporting accuracy and operational effectiveness.

Research accounting issues and recommend best practices to improve financial operations.
Team Support & Collaboration

Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to junior accounting team members.

Act as a resource for day-to-day accounting questions and operational issues.

Provide backup support for team members during periods of absence, ensuring continuity of departmental operations.

Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and contribute to special projects and strategic initiatives.

Support the accounting team across a broad range of financial responsibilities as business needs evolve.

Perform other duties and ad hoc analyses as assigned.
Qualifications

CPA designation (or equivalent legacy designation: CA, CMA, or CGA) required.

Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a multi-entity, multi-currency environment.

Strong understanding of financial reporting, month-end close, reconciliations, and internal controls.

Experience preparing consolidated financial reporting is considered a strong asset.

Experience supporting external audits and preparing audit working papers.

Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

Experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains), EKA, or comparable ERP systems is considered an asset.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
