The Senior Civil Superintendent is responsible for overseeing daily field operations for civil construction projects in the Calgary and Southern Alberta area. This role involves providing direct site leadership to crews, subcontractors, and suppliers, while coordinating field activities to ensure that projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with the drawings, specifications, schedule, budget, and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead daily site operations, coordinating crews, subcontractors, equipment, materials, and suppliers.
- Plan and sequence work to meet safety, quality, and schedule targets; maintain short-interval lookahead schedules.
- Review drawings, specifications, permits, and requirements; flag constraints early and resolve with the Project Manager.
- Provide clear direction to foremen and field teams; maintain a visible, disciplined leadership presence on site.
- Monitor daily production vs. plan; adjust sequencing and resources to avoid trade stacking, rework, and delays.
- Communicate schedule risks, constraints, and recovery options to the Project Manager.
- Champion site safety: enforce policies and OH&S requirements; lead toolbox meetings/FLHAs; conduct inspections; stop unsafe work.
- Ensure all work meets drawings, specs, codes, standards, and approved submittals; coordinate inspections, testing, survey, and quality documentation.
- Verify layout and elevations for constructability; manage RFIs, changes, non-conformances, and field documentation.
- Track daily labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and production quantities; complete accurate daily reports.
- Identify potential changes, extra work, delays, and impacts early; support cost control, quantity tracking, and change management.
- Verify subcontractor progress; support review of invoices, field tickets, and measured quantities.
- Coordinate with owners, consultants, inspectors, utilities, municipalities, and internal teams; represent the company professionally.
- Maintain effective communication between field and office; support strong relationships while protecting the company’s contractual position.
Competencies and Skills
- Minimum 7–10 years of civil construction experience, with progressive responsibility in a foreman, general foreman, or superintendent role with a general or civil contractor
- Strong experience with civil infrastructure work in the Calgary or Southern Alberta market.
- Strong understanding of civil construction methods, sequencing, productivity, and field coordination.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, schedules, permits, and contract documents.
- Practical knowledge of:

Working Conditions
- Primarily field-based on active construction sites in Calgary and surrounding areas.
