Reporting to the Health & Safety Services Coordinator, the Safety Lead provides the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science with technical and administrative support in the areas of chemical compliance, inventory, storage, safety, and disposal, in both the research laboratory and teaching laboratory settings. The position also supports health and safety training, development of training, SOPS, risk assessments, and ensuring emergency equipment is functioning as required. The position is a tool for the Dean to ensure safety and compliance and therefore supports the work of laboratory instructors and engineering researchers. The position interacts with Faculty of Engineering & Applied Science programs, students, research institutes, other technical staff, and Health & Safety. This position works on a regular basis with hazardous materials.
Specific Accountabilities include:
1. Provides information and leadership to the U of R Health and Safety Management System;
2. Promotes health and safety policies and guidelines in compliance with legislation and researches leading practices and standards;
3. Promotes programs in support of health and safety and works with faculties, students and departments to support and promote health and safety initiatives;
4. Provides health and safety advice and support to students, Principle Investigators and the Associate Dean, Graduate & Research;
5. Assists with education and training in health and safety best practices;
6. With training and guidance of Health, Safety and Wellness, conducts risk assessments, and support others in conducting risk assessments and writing Safe Operating Procedures;
7. Assists with root cause investigations for reported incidents and near miss situations. Helps key stakeholders to implement mitigation measures and assists with monitoring those measures for effectiveness;
8. Provide guidance and support to help Principle Investigator ensure all research personnel have appropriate health and safety training;
9. Work with research personnel to ensure emergency equipment is functioning as required (e.g., eyewash, chemical spill kits, fire extinguisher);
10. Work with Principle Investigator to ensure preventative maintenance is completed as required on research equipment (e.g., fume hood, centrifuge, autoclave) and maintain basic lab supplies.
11. Aid in labeling of chemicals, samples, wastes, preparation of chemical disposal. Update chemical inventory and SDSs of new chemicals/samples.
12. Receive deliveries of compressed gases, transport compressed gases to designated locations, receiving deliveries of samples and other chemicals.
Position Requirements
Position Requirements:
- Undergraduate degree in Science or Engineering and Applied Science;
- Must be a current graduate student within the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science;
- Previous work experience in a laboratory or research setting is preferred;
- General knowledge of the scope and application of a health and safety management system, health and safety programs and practices in a post-secondary environment;
- Good planning, organizational, analytical and administrative skills;
- Good interpersonal, communications, mentoring, facilitation and presentation skills;
- Knowledge of adult learning principles; and
- Demonstrated ability to analyze data and to formulate sound and consistent judgment and opinions.

Pay Grade CUPE Phase 3 Salary Range $23.25 - $27.91 hourly Status Term Work Hours
