Main Purpose of the Job:
The Journeyperson Carpenter performs skilled carpentry work independently and in compliance with Red Seal Occupational Standards, provincial building codes, and project specifications. This role requires technical expertise, strong workmanship, and leadership in maintaining safety and quality.
Living Out Allowance (LOA): $55 per day
- LOA will increase to $65 per day upon successful completion of a 3-month probationary period.
- A wage review will be conducted after 3 months of employment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform skilled carpentry tasks including layout, framing, finishing, formwork, and renovations.
- Interpret and work from construction drawings, specifications, and schedules.
- Measure, cut, assemble, and install materials in accordance with Red Seal standards.
- Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, safety regulations, and quality standards.
- Safely operate and maintain hand and power tools.
- Troubleshoot construction challenges and propose effective solutions.
- Support and mentor apprentices in accordance with apprenticeship guidelines.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Construction Manager.
Qualifications:
- Red Seal Carpenter certification is required.
- Completion of a recognized carpentry apprenticeship program.
- Minimum 4–5 years of combined apprenticeship and journeyperson experience.
- Thorough knowledge of Canadian building codes and construction practices.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to work effectively in a team environment and follow instructions.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Must supply own hand tools and required PPE.
- Ability to work in a remote location and coastal weather conditions.
- Zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol while on shift.
- Basic understanding of carpentry tools, materials, and construction practices.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to learning.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Valid driver’s license is required.
Working Conditions:
- Primary work location is Klemtu, British Columbia.
- Work is performed primarily on active construction sites, with regular exposure to weather, noise, dust, and other physical hazards.
- Strict compliance with all occupational health and safety requirements is mandatory, and personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times while on site.
- Projects include residential housing construction and renovation, with the potential for larger infrastructure or capital projects.
- Standard work schedule consists of 10-hour shifts on a rotational basis of fourteen (14) days on and fourteen (14) days off.
- Work hours may vary based on project requirements and may include evenings, weekends, or extended hours.
- Compensation is provided on a blended wage rate basis, and overtime pay does not apply under this structure.
- Meals are provided during scheduled work periods.
- Accommodation is provided in a bunkhouse setting, including private bedrooms with shared bathrooms and common living areas.
