Junior Software Engineer
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia (In-Person)
Type: Full-Time
Who We Are
Virtual Hallway is changing the way healthcare is delivered by making collaboration between frontline clinicians and their specialist peers seamless and immediate. We’ve built a thriving platform connecting over 10,000 clinicians who rely on our digital tools to improve patient care, alongside the largest accredited medical education library in Canada. We’re growing quickly, expanding nationally, and driving innovation in healthcare education with podcasts, interactive learning, and more.
Our ethos, “Medicine Together,” reflects our commitment to empowering clinicians and building a better healthcare system. Great software starts with great people, and we’re looking for talented early-career engineers. That’s where you come in.
The Role
As a Junior Software Engineer at Virtual Hallway, you'll make real contributions to a platform used by clinicians across Canada every day. You'll work closely with experienced engineers to get better at your craft, learning and contributing across the full stack from day one.
This role is for someone early in their career who is self-driven, coachable, and genuinely excited about writing good software. You don’t need to have all the answers - you just need the drive to find them.
Key Responsibilities
Build & Learn
- Implement tasks and features with guidance from more senior developers.
- Write clean, maintainable code and follow established coding standards.
- Contribute to bug fixing and maintenance tasks to gain familiarity with the codebase.
- Learn and apply core development tools and workflows (Git, CI/CD, testing frameworks).
Collaborate & Grow
- Participate in code reviews, incorporating feedback to improve your technical skills.
- Collaborate with teammates during sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives.
- Work with Product, Design, and Support to understand requirements and contribute to product planning discussions.
- Actively seek feedback and mentorship to accelerate your growth.
- Follow and uphold privacy, security, and data protection best practices in all development activities.
Who We’re Looking For
You’ll thrive in this role if you:
- Dig in: You explore how things work and aren't thrown by unfamiliar problems.
- Act on feedback: You treat every code review as a way to get better, not a verdict.
- Communicate openly: You ask questions early, and you contribute to the team rather than just your own tickets.
- Sweat the details: You hold yourself to a high standard even on small tasks.
- Bring ideas: You question the status quo and aren't shy about a fresh approach.
Required Experience & Skills
- 0–2 years of professional software development experience (internships, co-ops, or relevant projects accepted).
- Familiarity with at least one programming language in our stack (PHP/Laravel, JavaScript/Vue3).
- Understanding of software fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, and version control).
- Comfort using AI-assisted development tools (such as Cursor or similar) to support learning, code quality, and productivity.
- Strong willingness to learn, take feedback, and grow in a collaborative environment.
- University degree, diploma, or equivalent practical experience.
What We Value
These are the principles that guide how we work as a company:
- Collaboration: Work well with others in a high-performing team.
- Curiosity: Explore new ideas, question the status quo, and constantly learn by doing.
- Creativity: Bring fresh perspectives to challenges and opportunities.
- Drive: Stay motivated to build something extraordinary.
