About Us
ONSITE3D operates a dedicated Data Lab in Calgary that processes high-volume terrestrial laser scan data captured by our field teams across industrial, refining, petrochemical, midstream, mining, and fabrication sites. Our work supports major Tier 1 owner-operators across Canada and internationally.
Our processing infrastructure is purpose-built to register, QA, and deliver engineering-grade point clouds suitable for design, fabrication, dimensional verification, as-built modeling, deviation analysis, and turnaround execution.
The Data Lab is the bridge between field scanning and downstream drafting, modeling, engineering, and client deliverables — and that is the seat we are hiring for.
Position Summary
The Junior Reality Capture Technician supports the Data Processing team in transforming raw terrestrial laser scan data into accurate, registered, and client-ready point cloud datasets.
This role works within established processing standards, internal QA/QC procedures, and project workflows to ensure every dataset meets accuracy expectations and is delivered on schedule.
The successful candidate will be trained on the full pipeline — from rawscan intake through registration, alignment, QC review, export, and client delivery — and will progress toward independently registering small-to-medium projects under the guidance of senior technicians.
Core Responsibilities
Project Setup and Data Management
- Receive, organize, and manage rawscan data uploaded by field crews.
- Set up new projects following internal standards and naming conventions.
- Maintain organized project file structures, documentation, and project records.
Processing and Registration
- Process raw laser scan data and prepare it for registration.
- Perform scan registration, point cloud alignment, and clustering of scan groups.
- Tighten registrations and perform QC checks to confirm alignment is within project tolerance.
- Apply survey control to lock registrations to project or plant coordinate systems.
Quality Control and Field Coordination
- Verify scan coverage, identify potential gaps, blind spots, or data quality issues.
- Review registration accuracy reports and confirm tolerances are met.
- Communicate findings to the Field Scanning team so that any required re-capture can be scheduled before crews demobilize.
Deliverables and Export
- Export point cloud deliverables in required client formats.
- Support preparation of registration quality reports and supporting documentation.
- Upload deliverables to client cloud portals or transfer systems as required.
Workflow and Team Support
- Track project progress and update status through internal tracking systems.
- Confirm deliverable requirements at project intake before work begins.
- Participate in pre-job meetings, scope reviews, and project kickoffs.
- Work alongside Senior and Lead Technicians within a structured mentorship environment.
- Adhere to ONSITE3D's safety program and HSE requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Strong computer aptitude and ability to learn specialized 3D software quickly.
- High attention to detail, especially with file management and registration accuracy.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to follow documented workflows, QA standards, and registration procedures.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Willingness to ask questions, troubleshoot, and follow structured training.
- Interest in laser scanning, reality capture, geomatics, surveying, engineering technology, or digital construction.
Preferred Qualifications
The following are considered assets but are not required:
- Diploma or certificate in Geomatics Engineering Technology, Surveying, Civil Engineering Technology, GIS, Drafting, Design Technology, or a related technical field.
- Exposure to laser scan processing or registration software (e.g., FARO SCENE, Autodesk ReCap, Leica Cyclone, Trimble RealWorks, CloudCompare, Navisworks, AutoCAD).
- Familiarity with terrestrial laser scanning hardware.
- Understanding of survey control concepts, coordinate systems, and registration accuracy reporting.
- Familiarity with common point cloud deliverable formats (RCS, RCP, E57, POD, LGS).
- Previous experience in laser scanning, surveying, drafting, fabrication, or industrial project environments.
Why ONSITE3D
- Hands-on training on industry-leading reality capture hardware and software.
- Exposure to Tier 1 owner-operator projects in oil & gas, mining, refining, and fabrication.
- A vertically integrated team where scanning, survey, processing, and client deliverables are executed under one roof.
- Structured mentorship from senior technicians and a clear technical runway for juniors.
