The Position at a Glance:
Reporting to, and under the direction of the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief directs, manages, supervises, and coordinates the activities of the Fire Prevention, Public Education, Operations and Training branches, (including fire suppression, medical, technical rescues) to ensure the safety of people, conservation of property and protection of the environment in emergency events. Assists in operational and strategic planning of the delivery of fire and emergency services. Performs statutory duties of the Fire Chief and Community Emergency Management Coordinator (CEMC) in the absence of the Fire Chief.
What You’ll Do:
- Organize and assume command of firefighting activities and related emergencies as required and ensures that volunteer officers and firefighters operate in a manner consistent with established procedures, accepted firefighting methods and occupational health and safety legislation.
- Support the Fire Chief (CEMC) to ensure the emergency operations centre operates and performs effectively, (including as a host municipality with respect to Bruce Nuclear Generating Station, under the Provincial Nuclear Emergency Response Plan) in the event of a declared emergency.
- Assist in the evaluation, monitoring and development, implementation and delivery of training, fire prevention and public education programs.
- Ensure compliance of Firefighters and Officers with NFPA standards, and provincial and municipal requirements.
- Supervises and coordinates the regular maintenance and repair of fire apparatus, fire pumps, extrication equipment, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus and breathing air compressors, personal protective equipment, radio communications, first aid and other medical equipment and other related equipment in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- As a member of the Community Emergency Management Team, assist in the planning of the annual emergency exercises and other duties, as required.
- Coordinate compliance activities relating to regulatory requirements, including SCBA regulations, defibrillation program, communicable diseases (Ministry of Health), PPE and other health and safety requirements.
- Prepare reports to Council under the direction of the Fire Chief.
- Act as a liaison between Volunteer firefighters, Volunteer Public Educators and the Fire Chief
- Act as a liaison for the Fire Department Health & Safety Committee
What You Bring to the Role:
- Education: Post-secondary education in Fire Service Management, Public Administration, Business Administration and continuing education from a recognized fire college or other accredited organization. Fire Officer Level II with the ability to obtain Fire Officer III and Fire Service Instructor Level II.
- Certifications: NFPA Specialized Certifications beneficial to Fire Services; Community Emergency Management Coordinator certification; Occupational Health and Safety training/certification, current First Aid, CPR, and defibrillator certification; valid driver’s license with DZ endorsement with driving record acceptable to the Corporation
- Fire Service Experience: Minimum five (5) years' experience at an officer level with applied, technical knowledge of firefighting, emergency response and business continuity planning, operations, methods, equipment, apparatus and procurement.
- Legislation: Technical knowledge of the Municipal Act, Emergency Management Act, Fire Prevention Act, Highway Traffic Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other related legislation.
- Communication: You have excellent communication skills.
- Problem Solving and Decision Making: You have the ability to make sound judgement calls and decisions under pressure.
- Strategic Planning: You have experience in supporting the development of short and long-range strategic plans.
- Financial Acumen: You have experience in the development and monitoring of operating and capital budgets including conducting research and specification identification of new equipment and the maintenance of existing physical resources.

Salary: $120,745 to $137,210 per year (depending on qualifications and experience),
Hours of work: 35 hours per week (8:30 am to 4:30 pm), with after-hour meetings required
