Overview
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Production Assistant Intern to join our print team. This paid internship offers hands-on experience in a dynamic environment, providing valuable exposure to print production processes, using industry-standard tools. The ideal candidate is eager to learn, possesses basic knowledge of elements and principles of design, typography, print terminology &c.
Duties
- Preparing and organizing print files for production.
- Assisting with the setup and operation of digital and letterpress printing equipment.
- Loading paper, cardstock, vinyl, and other substrates into machines.
- Monitoring print runs for quality, colour accuracy, and registration.
- Trimming, folding, scoring, perforating, laminating, and binding finished products.
- Packaging and preparing completed jobs for delivery or pickup.
- Maintaining inventory of paper, ink, toner, and production supplies.
- Performing routine cleaning and maintenance of production equipment.
- Conducting quality control checks throughout production.
- Reading job tickets and ensuring specifications are followed accurately.
- Assisting with die-cutting, embossing, foil stamping, and other finishing processes when required.
- Receiving shipments and organizing materials in the production area.
- Communicating with designers, production managers, and customers regarding job status.
- Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
- Meeting production deadlines while maintaining high standards of workmanship.
- Setting up and feeding presses.
- Preparing makereadies for die-cutting and letterpress work.
- Washing rollers and press components.
- Organizing type, dies, plates, and press accessories.
- Assisting with hand-finishing, numbering, perforating, and packaging specialty print products.
- Report directly to the Director of Production & Principal Designer
Experience
Previous experience in a print shop, sign shop, bindery, mail house, or manufacturing/production environment preferred.
- Familiarity with basic print production processes, including printing, trimming, folding, and packaging.
- Experience handling paper stocks, envelopes, labels, vinyl, or other print materials.
- Ability to read and follow work orders, job tickets, and production specifications.
- Experience performing quality control inspections and maintaining accuracy throughout production runs.
- Comfortable using hand tools, measuring devices, and basic production equipment.
- Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 50 lbs (23 kg).
Asset Qualifications:
- Experience operating digital production printers, cutters, laminators, bindery, or finishing equipment.
- Knowledge of offset printing, letterpress, die-cutting, foil stamping, embossing, or other specialty print processes.
- Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, Illustrator, or other graphic design software.
- Experience with inventory management, shipping, and receiving.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform routine equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
Training and Education
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Post-secondary education in Graphic Communications, Printing Technology, Graphic Design, or a related field is considered an asset but not required.
Pay: $17.20-$28.89 per hour
