The Assistant Early Childhood Educator in the Infant Room plays an important role in creating a warm, nurturing, and responsive environment where infants feel safe, secure, and supported in their early development.
Working alongside the Lead Educator, this role supports the planning and implementation of developmentally appropriate programming that promotes infants’ social, emotional, cognitive, language, and physical development. The Assistant Educator contributes to a collaborative, positive, and well-functioning classroom environment by supporting daily routines, classroom activities, and responsive caregiving practices.
This position is ideal for someone patient, attentive, and knowledgeable about infant development, who enjoys working as part of a team and is passionate about supporting early learning through responsive caregiving, exploration, and meaningful relationships.
Duties
- Support the Lead Educator in planning and implementing responsive, developmentally appropriate experiences that support infants’ curiosity, sensory exploration, attachment, and developmental milestones.
- Help create and maintain a calm, safe, and nurturing classroom environment that supports individualized care and early learning.
- Supervise infants during play, routines, and outdoor time, ensuring safety while encouraging exploration and development.
- Assist with daily routines including feeding, diapering, naps, transitions, and individualized care schedules.
- Build trusting and responsive relationships with infants through consistent caregiving, communication, and emotional support.
- Model positive guidance and responsive caregiving practices that support infants’ emotional security and social development.
- Work collaboratively with the Lead Educator by supporting classroom routines, sharing observations, and contributing to a positive team environment.
- Foster open communication, mutual respect, and shared responsibility within the classroom team.
- Support the implementation of effective teaching strategies, classroom organization, and responsive caregiving approaches as guided by the Lead Educator.
- Assist in preparing engaging sensory and exploratory experiences that promote language development, motor skills, cognitive growth, and social interaction.
- Help ensure the classroom environment is well-organized, developmentally appropriate, inclusive, and reflective of infants’ needs and interests.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene, ensuring toys, materials, feeding areas, and learning spaces are properly sanitized and maintained.
- Monitor the safety and appropriateness of all classroom materials, sleeping equipment, and play environments.
- Support infants in developing confidence, secure attachments, and emerging self-help skills through consistent routines and responsive interactions.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, including attendance, feeding schedules, diapering routines, observations, sleep records, and family communication.
- Communicate effectively with families, sharing updates on children’s development, routines, and daily experiences as appropriate.
- Collaborate with team members and leadership to ensure smooth daily operations and continuous program improvement.
- Ensure compliance with all licensing regulations, center policies, safe sleep practices, and health and safety standards.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful environment for children, families, and staff.
Qualifications
- Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Certificate Level 2 or Level 3
- Valid Infant/Child First Aid and CPR certification
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Solid understanding of infant development and responsive caregiving practices
Experience
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience in an early childhood setting
- Experience working with infants is required
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Experience working with diverse needs and abilities
