Position Summary:
The successful Mate is responsible to maintain the appearance of the vessel which includes directing daily activities of the crew, maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the vessel, and assisting with navigating and maneuvering the vessel; will uphold the strictest safety standards for guests and crew; and will maintain a professional and friendly manner consistent with our RESPECT Service System.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Stand look-out watch on bow, stern, or bridge wings to look for obstructions in the ship's path or to locate navigational aids such as buoys and lighthouses.
- Assist Captain in setting up bridge equipment, navigation watch, and ship reporting.
- Take a lead role in maintaining and updating charts and publications.
- Carry out Captain's orders and take command if Captain becomes unable to do so.
- Participate in the execution of the Safety Program, including emergency drills
- Assign deck crew tasks and provide direction.
- Provide an amazing experience to guests and coworkers as prescribed in our RESPECT Service System.
- Ensure safe means of embarkation and disembarkation of passengers and crew.
- Carry out regular safety inspections of the boat and ensure that the ship is in seaworthiness.
- Maintain the cleanliness, sanitization and safety of all common areas including but not limited to: Gangways, Pier Facilities, Ramps, and the entire vessel.
- Load or unload materials from vessels & handle lines to moor vessel to the pier.
- Carry out checks on the lifesaving and firefighting equipment.
- Supervise and perform routine shipboard maintenance as required.
- Participate as needed for the proper maintenance of all ship systems and boarding facilities, including but not limited to pumping in or out of the water (potable, raw, black, and gray) gangways, communications, navigation, and Planned Maintenance System (Wheelhouse).
- Assist Engineer in operating and maintain ship equipment such as engines and generators or other equipment.
- Ensure that the crew wears the proper PPE, especially when carrying out critical activities.
- Report any safety and security concerns to the Captain, Port Captain or Associate Director, Marine Operations.
- Be prepared to begin work at the scheduled time.
- Willingness to work extended shifts as business needs dictate.
- Maintain uniform and personal grooming in compliance with appearance standards.
- Additional job duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- Mate 60 Gross Tonnage certificate
- Small Vessel Machinery Operator (training provided)
- Current Marine Basic First Aid
- Current (within previous two (2) years) Transport Canada approved medical
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in the marine environment
- Ships Security Officer Certificate an asset
- Restricted Operator Certificate ROC-MC
- Candidates, who, in addition to the above, have relevant skills such as ship-handling, customer service, foreign language knowledge, will be given strong consideration
- A positive attitude and good work ethic
- Ability to sweep, mop, and wash down decks to remove dirt, and debris, using brooms, mops, brushes, and hoses
- Ability to reach, bend, stoop, wipe, push, pull, move or lift up to 45 pounds (20 kilograms)
- Walk, stand, sit and work in all types of weather conditions for extended periods
- Continually and repeatedly perform functions indoors and outdoors
- If required, wear assigned Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (i.e. non-slip shoes, gloves, weather appropriate dress attire, sun protection)
- Will be required to be available for work on all major holidays
