Position Overview
We are looking for a Mechanical Lead Hand to join our small, skilled, mechanical field team. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical systems and equipment. You will ensure all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory standards while representing Drake Excavating professionally to clients, the public, and other trades.
Work is primarily in the Lower Mainland, with occasional projects in Whistler, Squamish, Kelowna, and Vancouver Island. Out-of-town work includes paid travel time, accommodations, LOA, and typically a return home by Friday afternoon.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise mechanical installations, maintenance, and repairs, including HVAC, plumbing, pumps, chemical systems, and piping
- Interpret drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications
- Ensure compliance with Drake’s OHS program, regulatory standards, and safe work practices
- Conduct daily FLHAs and weekly toolbox talks
- Coordinate with Project Management, Dispatch, clients, and other trades to ensure smooth project execution
- Maintain accurate documentation, including hours, packing slips, maintenance logs, and as-built drawings
- Ensure efficiency, quality, and productivity on site, and keep job sites clean, organized, and secure
- Represent Drake Excavating in a professional and safety-focused manner
Typical Projects & Equipment
- Stainless steel and epoxy-coated carbon steel piping (3"–18"+)
- Pump installations: split case, vertical turbine, submersible, screw
- Chemical systems: storage tanks, dosing skids, piping, instrumentation, fill systems
- Small-bore threaded stainless steel piping (50 mm or less)
- Valves: gate, butterfly, actuated, air release, check, and control valves
What We’re Looking For
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Strong mechanical background in municipal or industrial installations
- Experience leading and working with a small crew
- Red Seal in Plumbing or Pipefitting considered an asset
- Professional communication skills with clients, inspectors, and other trades
- Commitment to safety, quality, and productivity
- Ability to problem-solve in the field and adapt to changing conditions
- Willingness to work out of town as required
