About the Role
The CAD Technician is a hands-on technical role embedded within our technical team. Working under the guidance of a qualified Marine Engineer and Naval Architect, you will translate design intent into precise, construction-ready drawings and models across a range of vessel systems and structures.
This position is well suited to a graduate or early-career professional from an engineering technology or manufacturing support program who is eager to grow their skills in a specialized marine environment. You will work with industry-standard tools including Rhino 3D and AutoCAD, contributing to both drawing production and 3D design development.

Key Responsibilities:
Drawing Production
- Produce detailed structural drawings for steel and aluminum components, including frames, plating, bulkheads, and structural assemblies.
- Develop systems schematics for marine applications including piping, electrical, HVAC, and fluid systems.
- Create general arrangement drawings, outfitting layouts, and equipment installation plans.
- Maintain drawing registers, revisions, and version control in accordance with project and quality requirements.
- Coordinate drawing packages to ensure consistency across structural, systems, and outfitting disciplines.
3D Modelling & Concept Development
- Build and refine 3D models in Rhino and AutoCAD to support engineering and production.
- Develop visual concept proposals and change models to communicate design intent to the engineering team, production, and other stakeholders.
- Assist with extracting drawing views, dimensions, and details from 3D models for use in production.
- Support evaluation of design alternatives by modelling geometric options and spatial arrangements.
Collaboration & Process Support
- Work closely with the Technical Supervisor, Project Manager, Design Manager, and other engineering staff to interpret design requirements and incorporate review feedback.
- Liaise with production teams to ensure drawings meet shop-floor needs.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of drafting standards, templates, and internal processes.
- Participate in design reviews, vessel walkthroughs, and coordination meetings as required.
- Assist with document management and as-built drawing updates throughout vessel construction.
Qualifications & Experience:
Education
- Diploma or certificate in Computer-Aided Design, Engineering Technology, or a related technical program from a recognized institution such as BCIT, UFV, or equivalent.
- Coursework or practical training in 3D CAD modelling, technical drawing, and manufacturing processes is strongly valued.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D drawing production is required.
- Working knowledge of Rhino 3D or willingness to develop proficiency quickly; prior experience with other parametric or surface modelling tools (e.g. SolidWorks, Fusion 360) is considered an asset.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
- Familiarity with drawing standards, GD&T principles, and document control practices.
- Understanding of structural or mechanical systems, materials, and fabrication methods; marine experience is a bonus but not required.
